Hello, I'm new here :)

Post by starlet »

Hi guys,

I've been lurking around for a few weeks and have enjoyed reading the tips being thrown around, so I decided to join and ask for some advice myself :)

I am 25 years old, 57 kilos and 167cm tall.
day job consists of sitting behind a desk for 8-10 hours :x
husband (toefa) and I sold our motorbikes and decided to cycle to work each day which is roughly 12kms each way, 5 days a week. I do pilates in lunch break on Thursdays and plan to start swimming once a week. Weekends are fairly active as well, we scuba dive at least one day.

Before I started cycling I was going to the gym 3 times a week mixing it up with cardio & weights. Since cycling, I no longer go to the gym but I'm starting to think I should do at least some form of weight training - once a week?

goal is not to lose weight (maybe 1 or 2 kilos wouldn't hurt) but I would like to be tone up...everywhere.

What do you think? Is one day of weight training enough? What would you recommend I do?

diet is pretty good most days . I eat 5 times a day evenly spaced out and I try to eat well 70% of the time and eat what I feel like 30% of the time - weakness is ice-cream :P

Thanks in advance, looking forward to your replies

you'll need 3 days of wts for 6 days of metabolism boosting goodness

this will probably mean you'll need to cut out some other stuff

Thanks for your reply swanso5.

Do you mean I should weight train 3 days a week and cut out some of cardio?

3 days of weights minimum would be preferable.

1 day, would just create some mild benefit you could almost certainly never retain. 2 might just about give you something to keep building on, but at least 3 would be the order of the day.

That 30% of the time eating how you feel may have to be reduced. You cannot achieve solid results, if you're going to just indulge a little too often. It's not about flatly saying no, as long as you're someone in pretty good nick already, as you won't have really grungy eating habits, but still more limiting would be beneficial, to help you get better physical reconditioning

Don't over do it on Cardio eithe.r 30 minutes of interval or something like that, 2-3x a week is all you'll need, so no pointless 6 hours of Treadmill a week.

Thanks Bossman!

OK, I'll aim for x3 days a week of weight training.
The only solid form of cardio I do is commute to and from work which equates to 1 hour a day, 5 days a week. I dislike public transport so cycling is now the only way to get to work. If I keep that up, do you think that's still too much?

As for hour session of pilates once a week, that is mainly for core - I don't see an issue with that do you?
Diving once a week, guess that would fit into cardio... I'm confused now

EDIT: I'll try and be better with diet :)

Pilates is fine. Cycling ot commute, isn't that much of a problem. You muight find it more Glycogen sapping depending on the number of hills / undulations during the trip and how fast you pedal as well.

So if you cycled at a moderate pace, you'd use less nautral human resources, and be more sparing on yourself.

Certainly public transport, is clearly a dislike, (i don't mind it personally), but to switch would cause you to spend more money, you might not want to, so stick to the cycling.

I'd make that your main form of Cardio.

Question. What's the reason behind the diving? I'm not criticising, or saying your shouldn't necessarily just curious.

That makes sense, thanks.

Yeah, I've never been a real fan of public transport so cycling it is.

As for the diving, I'm making way up to instructor I love the sport! If I'm not in the water at least once a week I get withdrawals :)
Toefa and I just completed our rescue course last weekend. It was pretty tough physically so cycling to work on Monday was a little difficult!

Good for you then, keep diving :).

However showering and bathing involves water, so how could you get withdrawal symptoms.
