2 new exercisers, just a couple pointers

Post by Torbin12 »

Ok, so female friend is tired of her over-weight, out-of-shape body, and wants to do something about it but doesn't feel like her motivation would stick if she did it alone, so I decided I would kinda take charge and keep her moving, sort of like a drill sergeant eh :P. Anyways, her big concern is losing weight, but she also wants to get healthier, as far as food goes, we try to eat healthy when we can, but typically, healthy means much more expensive, at least where we live, so we try to do what we can, as far as the weight loss goes, I used to hear that cardio/running was basically the best way to go about losing fat and getting in shape, is that true or just some sort of old wives tale?

Any help given is greatly appreciated, thanks

Hi Torbin, good to speak with you.

Cardio can be good for weight loss, but weight lifting can be also, as 1lb of added muscle can burn an extra 45-50 calories per day.

What are the meal times and what foods do you eat at those times?

Do you do any training currently?

Cardio is good for weight but it depends on the person. Personally I find High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) works best for me for example tabata training. 20 seconds high intensity, 10 seconds rest x8 (4 minutes) rest and repeat. Especially for someone who lacks motivation or doesn't completely enjoy working out its fast and intense and you don't have to spend hours in the gym. Lifting weights is also good for losing weight, but some people don't enjoy weight training or find it difficult with technique etc.
