HIIT tecnique

Post by clare_1 »

I started doing this recently and wonder what you think of routine. I hope Swanso wont shout at me for starting a new thread :?

30 second walk
30 second sprint
30 sec walk
1 min spring
Im only repeating 4 times though. Is this not enough?
I do it after weights and i just feel wasted after 10 mins or so of doing HIIT. Im sure i will work up to more though. Im doing this 3-4 times a week.

Gymboss interval timer

Post by erin.strait »

Just thought I would let everyone know that for HIIT technique that the best device to take a lot of the guess work out of counting and more intensity into your workouts is to use the Gymboss interval timer and stop watch! I purchased mine on Amazon. Good luck and happy HIIT! :D

We did not call it HIIT when I started doing this. We just called it "spurtin'".

I would jog until I felt warmed up. I would then sprint until lungs felt like they would burst. Then I would jog until I caught breath again. Then repeat.

No stop watches. Just listening to body.

If you have inner drive this will work just fine--better than "fine" if you are really driven.

Otherwise, use the stop watch.

The time I got in best shape was when I ran with brother. Sibling rivaly got us to compete at the highest levels. A great way to train hard.

I have to say i am missing doing HIIT since i started doing weights (as i cannot manage it after). I am starting going with friend again next week who enjoys doing some cardio first (i have yet to convince her about lifting heavy).

So is it really gonna be a bad thing if i do some HIIT before the weights???

why dont you do your cardio in between weight days? saves you worrying about it on weight days? just a thought!

Not necessarily a bad thing. I cannot lift as heavy by doing cardio prior to weight training, so I always do it after. Plus I really enjoy cardio after the weights, so I look forward to a good cardio trip vs. the other way around. Depends on your goals I guess.

Sorry, I didnt explain properly. I have said in other posts that I feel quite ill near the end of workout and for a while after which has been preventing me from doing cardio after weights. I also work long days (nursing) so can only manage to workout 3 times a week. Due to these factors swanso suggested i dont do cardio and weights on the same day and if time is limited to just do the weights and if i get any extra time add in some cardio. Extra time, btw, does not ever happen in life.

so this is why i was asking about the hiit before weights?

Gotcha  Out of curiosity....are you getting enough nutrition before your workout as in carbs for energy and protein for strength? If not, that may be a reason why you feel so whipped! Working in the medical field myself with long shifts, I tend to not do any cardio on those days and weights only as I spend most of day running around taking care of patients. So I do get some cardio...not a sweat though  Like I said, you can do it before or after, personal preference :D

sorry clare i didnt read the part about you only managing to workout 3 times a week! have you got any spare time at all between weight days? as you could maybe invest in an exercise bike for your cardio at home? girlfriend recently bought an exercise bike from argos for about £90-£100 and says its really good! that way you could do your cardio between weight days from the comfort of your own home!

The nutrition is definitely something im working on. Its a matter of trial and error at the moment. Im thinking of eating a bit closer to workout time, even as little as 30 mins. I just get so wiped out. Im also gonna get a blood test just to eliminate medical problems.

I work 3 7.30am till 9pm shifts a week. I then workout for 3 days and have a days rest (if you call doing all cleaning, ironing, washing etc etc resting). I do try to walk as much as possible but that isnt really intense enough for me. I had an exercise bike at home but i didnt have the time or the energy to use it on top of gym days.

If eating before the workout doesnt help, i have thought of trying doing the weights and then havin a banana/half a sandwich/flapjack etc, and then doing 20 mmin of HIIT.

So on 3 days workouts next week im gonna do the following to see what works, any other suggestions are more then welcome :)

1) eating a ham and cheese sandwich 30 min before workout and then doing weights and 15-20 min of HIIT

2) eating the sandwich 30 min before and doing 15-20 min HIIT then weights (and see if i am struggling more then doing it the other way)

3) doing the weights, then eating a banana etc (any ideas for best thing to have?) and then doing 15-20 min HIIT

After the week i will decide what method is going to be best for me.

wts first always...would you rather pass out sitting on an exercise bike or holding wts above your head? it simply safer to do wts first if nothing else

you're only liottle so you don't even need 20mins of HIIT, 10mins will easily be enough

on your "cleaning" day i'd pop some HIIT on that day..some bodyweight circuits at home for 10mins...easy

not sure how eating then doing HIIT straight after will go

don't overthink this,. your work capacity simply might not be high enough for all of this yet...i'd do 1 HIIT session this week and even if you feel fine, only add a second one in next week
