Is it ok to hang on to the sides of the treadmill when walking or is it better to swing your arms?

Swing your arms, the more you move the more you get your heart rate up.

Thanks! I have tried not hanging on, but I have a hard time keeping balance. I mean, I can't walk straight at times when not hanging on. Is that something I just need to get used to?

In walking and running the swinging of your arms creates the balance for your body. You walk and run more efficiently when your arms are swinging free.

For that reason you should not carry your I-Pod in your hand, but rather have it on your arm band or waist.

Indeed, if you want to break from a jog to a sprint, the best way is to start to move your arms quickly and your legs will follow naturally.

So, in short, don't hold onto the hand rails unless you have balance issues.

I'd say swing your arms when on the treadmill. You said you need them for balance, well maybe not holding on can work to your advantage. You'll gain better balance and posture, which is a grat thing.
