In walking and running the swinging of your arms creates the balance for your body. You walk and run more efficiently when your arms are swinging free.
For that reason you should not carry your I-Pod in your hand, but rather have it on your arm band or waist.
Indeed, if you want to break from a jog to a sprint, the best way is to start to move your arms quickly and your legs will follow naturally.
So, in short, don't hold onto the hand rails unless you have balance issues.
