What's the take on a low fat diet? say if you eat healthy whole grains, fruits, vegetables and lean proteins. not processed sugars. Its similar to what a lot of people are eating here really without the pbutter and cheese, etc.
Is it true that if you eat low fat food you can eat more because the body burns calories to turn carbs into fat versus when you eat food that is higher in fat it already is fat?

Low Fat is certainly not ideal. Low "Saturate Fat" yes, as even based on a 2,000 calorie a day diet, 20g should be a max for Saturates from a 70g overall Fat max.

Re: low fat diet
I cannot tell you which book I read this from but fat takes a long time to digest (9 calories per gram), keeping you full longer than carbs or protiens, but on the flip side, fat is craved by our bodies. Once fats are mixed with simple carbs, the cravings increase threefold. Think cookies and ice cream compared to steak and dark meat chicken, from own fattie experience, I could only physically eat so much meat, no matter the fat content, compared to cookie and chips where I could tuck away a whole bag at one sitting. Even with fake fats this happens because our system can't distinguish between real and fake until after it is completely digested. So when you eat low fat cookies and low fat ice cream you still desire it the same, then most people bargain with themselves that since it is low fat, they can have more. The calories in something labeled low fat can be more than it's full fat counterpart.
I say eat fats in moderation with olive oil, lean meats, real butter, but just don't go over board.

Re: low fat diet
I've followed the fads and trends of diets for years and often find that the problem is everyone takes these diets to extreme thereby missing the point of the whole diet.
For example, low fat became fat free and many people (especially women) gave up all fats including very necessary fats. Same for carbs, rather than rid themselves of unhealthy carbs, people went to extremes and cut out all carbs. The body NEEDS healthy fats and carbs as part of the daily function of the body to be healthy. And to really make point, low fat diets were HUGE as was/is low carb and our country is battling obesity, clearly something isn't working.
Here is an excerpt from an article from the NY Times on low fat diets:
The largest study ever to ask whether a low-fat diet reduces the risk of getting cancer or heart disease has found that the diet has no effect.
The $415 million federal study involved nearly 49,000 women ages 50 to 79 who were followed for eight years. In the end, those assigned to a low-fat diet had the same rates of breast cancer, colon cancer, heart attacks and strokes as those who ate whatever they pleased, researchers are reporting today.
"These studies are revolutionary," said Dr. Jules Hirsch, physician in chief emeritus at Rockefeller University in New York City, who has spent a lifetime studying the effects of diets on weight and health. "They should put a stop to this era of thinking that we have all the information we need to change the whole national diet and make everybody healthy."
The study, published in today's issue of The Journal of the American Medical Association, was not just an ordinary study, said Dr. Michael Thun, who directs epidemiological research for the American Cancer Society. It was so large and so expensive, Dr. Thun said, that it was "the Rolls-Royce of studies." As such, he added, it is likely to be the final word.
