Calorie Intake for Working Out

Post by Italia21 »

Hi,

name is Alex. I recently started lifting, and stumbled on this website. I started noticing that I'm not eating nearly as much I should be. Right now I work out 3 days a week, and I run 3 days a week. current weight is approximately 155 lbs. I'm only taking in around 2000 calories per day; however, I'm getting about 100 grams of protein everyday (muscle mass is around 70 lbs right now). Is increasing daily calorie count more important? or will I keep gaining muscle and strength as long as I have enough protein intake?

Thanks for any help you can give me.

I'd not exceed 2,500 calories a day for starters. 2,000 is for sedentary people. Aim for another 300-500 above that for exercise. protein intake then should be around 1.2g per lb bodyweight, 1.5g max.

Anything above 2,500 may increase calorie conversion to Fat and until you really need more significant calories to bulk, don't bother with them. I think It's easier to keep Fat off when bulking, than it is to get it off when bulked.

THe biggest mistake is guys who've bene lifting for 3-6 months, reading about the calories 180lb+ guys eat and thinking they must copy that to carry on bulking, when they stall, then say they'll start eating another 1,500 a day.

A guy that is 190lbs and eats 4,000 calories a day, needs pretty much all of them. A guy who weighs 150, wouldn't and would just increase Fat gain amounts with muscle, almost certainly.

Yeah, I agree with BossMan,

Don't over do it. Remember the body can only utilize what it needs and thats' what you should give it. Anymore will just store as a fat. Can trust what you read in most muscle mags they are geared toward guys on juice. Ultimately your muscular development will be genetically limited.
