prob the best exercises for the legs are the squat and lunge, depending on if you want to increase size or just make them more athletic looking will depend on reps and if you need weight or just body weight, heavier wieghts ie 6 reps for strength and size and 12 plus for endurance

if you want to increase your thigh strength then its gonna be heavier weights and less reps
go for 6-8 reps and work the weight according but keep you form and technique through the movement
squats are great but if you use a gym then isolating the muscles with a leg extension and leg curl is a good idea as well but use these after you have squated

the gym has its obvious benefits but not everyone likes using them
so for the legs make sure you do some body weight squats and lunges and as you become stronger start adding some plyometric exercises in such as squat jumps and split jumps, these are hard but will help with the leg strength and require no equipment. going up and down steps is also good and great for the lungs.
