Cardio/Muscle Gain
I have been working out pretty hard for the last few months, and I just told uncle that I would run a marathon with him in May. Is it smart for me to do so much cardio while training to gain muscle, or is this unhealthy?
Re: Cardio/Muscle Gain
it's not unhealthy but you'll be trying to acheive 2 opposite goals at the same time

Yeah, swanso5 is right, all that cardio will not only make it darn near impossible to gain muscle, you'll likely lose muscle mass. Even if you eat sufficient calories 2 things work against you. First your body will be in a almost constant catabolic state from all the running and second long distance running lowers your testosterone for a fairly long period post running. Without adequate levels of this hormone you will not gain muscle mass.
If you have to do the marathon then try to separate your runs and resistance training by no less than 4 hours and preferably alternate days, up your protein and carbs, and sleep longer. Post workout (within 45 minutes) have 12 -16 ounces of low fat chocolate milk dosed with 5 grams of creatine. Follow with a balanced meal within an hour.
Best of luck.
