Must Get...Faster

Post by Sub10Mike »

I am a self-taught sprinter. I'm 27, so that sorta puts me up there in age when it comes to competitive sprinting. I don't have much experience in competition, as I have just recently (a week ago) competed for the first time.

Previous to this sprint training (which started back in 2004, off and on), I lifted weights for aesthetics. I was primarily using an unorthodox methodology combining some old school "dinosaur training" (rocks, chains, crude sleds), olympic lifts, and modern iron work. This amalgam program produced some incredible gains, but I perhaps was not entirely disciplined in eating habits. I weighed 215 lbs before I realized that I was big and strong, but not healthy.

The big break from this program started when I started working as a manager for a track team at the local university. It really opened eyes to the methodology and discipline required to create world class athletes. I wanted to be them. THEY were fit. I felt like I was a million miles away while standing amongst them.

It was then that I began this long trek to this point. I have started and stopped, second-guessed methods and rationale for upwards of 6 years now. I have not had a good support base to help me in this pursuit, but now that has changed.

In one week, I will have drafted the initial plan and workouts for improving posterior chain strength and overall conditioning. I will simulate one outdoor season leading to two simulated meets during late summer.

Season 1:
March-May (GPP1)- PC strength, conditioning (hills)
May/June-July (SPP1)- Starts, Acceleration, Overdistance
Peak (simulated meet)

August-Sept (SPP2)
Peak (simulated meet)

Season 2:
Late Sept-Nov (GPP2)- PC strength, conditioning
Dec-Jan (SPP3)- Starts, Overdistance (emphasis)
Jan-March (indoor season + maintenance work)
March-July (outdoor season + maintenance work)

I will run the 60 and 200m indoors. Then I will run the 100 and 200m outdoors. I hope that some overdistance/speed endurance work will help core conditioning, in effect, leading to efficient sprinting.

I'm not a runner so can't comment on your plan. Just wanted to say welcome and good for you. Best of luck with the plan!
