I go in the mornings by myself. This hasn't happened to me, and since I'm female I don't think it would (unless another girl asked me I suppose), but I have a questions about being asked to spot someone.
If a stranger asks you to spot them, what do you do? I'm usually on a pretty strict time schedule- I go in, do thing, and get out before parking meter expires. I don't have unplanned spotting time figured in, but I saw a guy today ask for spotting from the guy next to me. Maybe they were friends, but they weren't lifting together.
It just brought the question to mind if I am in the situation, is it utterly rude to say "I'm sorry no" or maybe phrase it "I don't feel comfortable spotting you because I don't know that I could lift that myself" would be better? I guess I put myself in the situation where what would I do if I needed a spotter? But the thing is, I know I go by myself, and I don't have a spotter, which is why I choose the weights that I do (example: I bench press dumbbells instead of barbells because I think it would get me out of a situation easier if one should occur).
I don't want to be stuck up or rude and not help someone, but time is certainly a factor. If I was going to the gym with a buddy and we were spotting each other it's different. I'm talking about people you don't know...
Thanks!!!!
Gym etiquette question?

I don't think its rude to politely say that you don't feel comfortable spotting them.
ex boyfriend often works out at the gym in the mornings while I'm in there. He has me spot him sometimes and I always ask if its ok if I push down the weight instead of pull up on it. :) For some reason he never sees the humor in that... and come to think of it he hasn't asked me to spot him in a while. Hmmmm... :)
