It's the lack of activity almost certainly.
You will need to become more active in some way, by doing some basic Cardio 2-3 times a week for 30 minutes, and some kind of weightlifting routine.
You will have to start slowly and carefully with the weights, if you've never doine it before, but it would be beneficial for over things like muscle and Bone condition, becasue at your age, decline with such things will get higher, so stemming it now, will help save off or prevent issues in 15-25 years from now.
Your best bet is to find time to get down a local Gym and get the one on one you need. You work from home, so you should be able to adapt your schedule, to fit in roughly upto as much as 1hr 30 including travelling time to and from.
I doubt it would have been a diet problem really, if being sedentary seems to be the issue.

<---56 here - and also thin entire life until I hit about 42, quit smoking gained a ton of weight, lost it and gained it back...quit again (for good!) 1/08 after very stressful times at work - then started eating clean and exercising 5-6 times per week in Dec. 08 - Lost 37 lbs! so far!!
advice is listen to what the folks here tell you - they have given me wonderful advice, and provide encouragement to follow through - I'm not losing much weight anymore, but losing inches - it's a great feeling!
I started going to the gym every morning, Cardio everyday and worked the machines. Now I'm doing full body weight training M-W-F and Cardio (HIIT) Tu and Sat - Steady cardio on Thursday with Sunday off. I NEVER exercised before Dec 08 in entire life - I will never give it up!
If I can help in any way, just let me know! You can follow some of posts - Lu's Workout Journal or first post in Diet and Nutrition (I forget what I called it) but move around and see what others have experienced, the advice they've been given and most important the progress!!
Welcome!

Thanks Lu and Bossman for replying to post. It is good to now that there are people out there who are age and have similiar weight gain. I was afraid to join in any chats for fear of being out of league with only younger individuals. As for joining a gym that is out of the question as I live fifteen miles from town and husband takes our only car to work. He works six days a week, about 12 hours a day. He did recently pruchase a used tred mill and stationary bicycle for me. We also live on 20 acres which is up and down hills, would walking help to lose weight? I just don't know where to start!

wise beyond his years that bossman
on the flipside a client thought i was 22 last week...yes i am looking good at 30
walking can work if you're obese otherwise you'll need some lunges, push ups, prone holds, squats and such
i'd suggest an adjustable wt set if you can get your hands on some

How lifting weights will help lose pounds
Sorry Bossman I didn't mean to offend you, I was talking about Lu though I was not sure how old you were. But being 50 is great I am at a real good place in life right now have raised 4 children and am now having time for just husband and I, also I have always looked younger than I am until I put on this extra weight. One of you suggested weights, I thought that only built muscle not helped you lose weight. Please inform the dumb one here as to how weight lifting helps you lose pounds. Thanks for all of your input, I really appreciate it!
