I recently started lifting dumbbells about a week ago. They're four pounds. I was told they will not give me definition. question is, how much do I have to lift to gain some definition in arms? I also want to increase upper body strength. How many reps should I do? How much protein do I need to consume?
I'd also like to lose fat in legs and gain muscle there. I don't know how to go about it though.
Any tips will be helpful. Please excuse ignorance.
I have no clue what I'm doing. Please advise.

There's honestly nothing to excuse
.
Those dumbbells won't. You need to be looking to do something like Total Body Training, which would be done doing 2 sets per muscle group, using about an 8-10 rep intensity.
Dumbbells are not really a practical option, as you would be better if it were possible, to buy things like Bars, Discs and a few other things.
I wonder if you're actrually able to get to a Gym, as it would be hard for us to show you how to perform things, even if we told you what might be best, as it would be difficult to show you different exercise techniques.
What by the way is your diet like? Meals, Times?
