Theres no need to do anything everyday. By all means incorporate them into a full body workout routine 3 times a week. 3 sets of 12.

Agreed. Except it's a bodyweight exercise so I wouldn't recommend 3 sets of 12. I would recommend 3 sets of as many as you can do each set.

For the past 42 years I've warmed up before every workout by doing 3 - 4 minutes of "wood chopping" with a 20 pound DB followed by dropping down and doing 50 pushups.

I don't consider them a part of workout, just a pre-workout warm up.

I don't think there is any reason not to do the pushups as long as they don't seriously reduce the amount of other training you need to do.

I think everyone on one of their off days need to commit time to a 30 min push-up workout. Push-ups are amazing, and they're also a great measuring stick. For instance, workout would include of:

-warm-up of 20 regular
-50 consecutive regular
-25 clap push-ups
-25 lateral explosive push-ups
-25 elevated push-ups

I find it gives me a good work out.

Anything you do regularly will be a good workout. The question is does this provide you with a workout which will maximally improve your physical condition. I'm not sure that it does. I think a more balanced workout would. If you are doing pushups, then you need to balance it with pullups, rows, abdominal work, lunges, squat thrusts, etc.

A monolithic exercise routine can cause imbalance of your physique which will limit its functionality.

If you are going to do "clap push ups", then you should try the ultimate cross-clap push ups which I used to do to mess up people watching.

How to do the ultimate cross-clap push up:

1. Start as a conventional push up
2. On the way up gain a bit of momentum by pushing up fast
3. Cross your arms quickly and "clap" the opposite shoulders
4. Quickly return your arms to the "catch" position and complete the push up.

NOTE: If you don't gain enough momentum on the way up and if you are not quick enough to return your arms to the "catch" position you will hit your nose/chin on the floor. This seems impossible at first but is quickly quite easy. (You will also sucker some people into trying it themselves and they will hit their chins on the floor. Great fun!)
