Hi,
I have worked-out for most of adult life. I've done everything from walking and running, and sprinting, to weight training and swimming (I like to do lots of different things and mix training routines up from time to time).
But what struck me a couple of months back was that I was spending too much time doing "useless" weight training exercises. For instance, I would find myself working biceps 3x a week this way or that way. Fine. They look nice and I'm happy with the results. However, I thought to myself why do I need to do this? I dont go to work and do biceps curls all day, so why would I do them so often anyway? So, I looked at weight routines started eliminating superfluous sets of this and that and focused on increasing practical weight training movements; essentially strenght needs to help me do things and work and home. I saved time and got better results and increased functional strenght and actually put on more lean tissue.
What I do (the core of training routine):
1)Biceps curls x1 a week.
2) Shoulder press 2x-to-3x times a week.
3) Sqauts 2x-to-3x times a week.
4) Deadlifts 2x-to-3x times a week.
5) Push-ups 4x-to-5x times a week.
6) Walking/sprinting 2x-to-4x times a week.
7) Climbing the stairs in condo (sometimes with ankle weights or a 20lbs. weight vest).
This is the core of exercise plan. In addition, I go shoot hoops every now and then, do crunches, pull-ups, and sometimes do kettle-bell work. Once in a while I'll do some bench presses or triceps curls. Oh, and frisbee, too. I dont spend hours in the gym (I dont even go to a gym; hate them). routines last no longer than an hour. I go for intensity over duration.
I asked myself a 2 months ago, " could I scale a 5 ft. wall, outrun an attacker, climb a tree in a few seconds?" The answer then was no. The answer now is yes. And I was fit then, or, at least considred myself fit. I think it was Ray Lewis who pointed out in a recent interview that you could tell a gym rat from a man who "worked" for his body. That inspired me more than anything else.
By the way, I dont take supplements. Never have and I dont care for them. I do take vitamins and fish oil. Dont drink milk either (frankly, it's disgusting to think what is going into cows, then going into you).
