Question on warm-ups

Post by sparrow »

husband doesn't think warming up for cardio (treadmill) or lifting weights is necessary.

I told him I do a light cardio on the treadmill before I do any lifting and he asked why.
I told him to warm up muscles, overall body, to get the kinks out so I don't injure myself.
He doesn't believe in this and says we don't need to get our blood flowing because it already is, otherwise we'd be dead.

Is there somewhere on here I can be directed to that explains why this is important.. or maybe I'm wrong.

thanks for any help.

weightlifting and cardio are two different things.

warming up is to gradually get the muscle prepared for the workout and if you are doing cardio gradually increase your heart rate from almost rest rate to close to your target rate.

it is not a good idea to go from a resting heart rate to higher rate in a very short period of time.

also muscles used in any excercise should be warmed up to avoid injury and increase performance.

the key thing is that the warm up excercise is usually the same excercise you will be doing at a lower pace/intensity.

say goal is to run a mile in 5min, i'd warm up 5 to 10 minutes at a pace of 7-8min per mile for some intervals to get body ready and i'd sprint a couple 1/8 to 1/4 miles at 5min/mile pace. noway should i get tired since i need to keep energy to reach goal

in a similar way, if goal was to press 3x200lbs, i'd do a warm up set by pressing 100lbs 10 times or so and another set at 150lbs for 8 reps or so then i'd do a weight acclimation set at 180lbs where i'd press maybe 6 times. this will help the blood get in the right muscles and acclimate the muscles and tendons to the weightload to avoid injuries. again i shouldn't get tired from warming up, i should get pumped and feel stronger/more explosive.

so to answer your question : in order to warm up for weight lifting you don't really need to do cardio warmups unless you need to train at a specific heart rate. a boxer would want to train at a heart rate close to real fighting conditions for instance.

hope this helps

I do a few minutes light Cardio to increase core temperature, before workouts, and then I do a bit of stretching.

I find that works for me, and I have never had serious injuries, just occasional niggles that were own fault, by not being careful enough.

cardio warm ups for wt sessions don't really make sense to me...if doing wts than 2 - 3 x 3 - 5 is what i normally do for 1st lower and upper body exercises and may be more if i feel i need more...i don't do cardio but if i did i'd do a 5min warm up max but probably doing various lunges, side to side steps, high knee jogging etc
