Program for 12 year old son

Post by Badger99 »

First Let me apologize for posting first on the weight training board. Should have seen this one.

son Kyle is 12 years old. Played his first year of tackle football last year. We have been strength training this offseason in the Gym. First 3 days a week and now 2 because he does baseball and practice 2 times a week.

Kyle is on week 7 and has made good progress so far. Normally we would do a routine like. Aerobic warmup 5 mins. All exercises 3 sets of 10-15. Squats on the smith or freemotion machine . Leg curls, Leg press, Ab crunches. Calf press. Assited pullups. (Shoulder press If I can get him to do them) His gains have been 30-60% on all exercises in 7 weeks. Mylenation and coordination I would think mostly.

What Im looking for is a baseline for a good training program for him without paying a fortune. Mostly what I find are programs to train professional fitness trainers. I worry about pushing him too hard at his age. How many sets per day? etc

I need exercises to improve strength but also coordination agility and quickness. Hopefully a good bag of exercises So I can change up a lot and he does not get bored. Im hoping to make up a notebook with several exercises on each page and he can pick from each page each day.
Sadly I have just not found much on the internet.

Any help is appreciated.

Thanks Chuck

I like medicine ball games for young kids. Basically they toss the medicine ball under handed, over handed and from the chest to each other. Generally they try to knock each other over with the tosses. It builds strength and endurance and coordination.

Broken fingers and noses are a possibility. Start out with a basket ball and then go to a 4, 6, 8, pound medicine ball. The kids find it to be fun.

I think 12 is too young for weight training. Push ups, squat thrusts, lunges, pull ups, sit ups and crunches are all OK.

I would wait until he is 16 or 17 before any serious weight training.

12 is far too young for weight training. What are your reasons behind this? I think children should have fun being fit by playing sports and interacting with others.

His body and brain are too immature for what you want. You dont want him getting too caught up on the whole muscle thing when he is still growing. Please reconsider and get him into some kinda sport.

What's wrong with that? I'm 99 and I don't know how many 12 year olds have have running around. (Those young hussies are all so damned fertile!)

Packard with a capital "P". At 99 I deserve that much even if I hadn't fathered all those kids in 1997.
