Hi, i'm a 16 year old who is recovering from a borderline eating disorder.
I have posted on this forum recently about this topic and got some nice replies which i'm really grateful of .
Ok , i'm 5 foot 10 inches and weight only 116 pounds!
I used to restrict myself to a clean diet ( no junk food ) but would deprive myself of enough food ( around 1800 - 2000 calories a day ) which is no where near enough for a teenage .
So after discussions with family over this i went to the doctors and was told i was underweight and was told to eat more. So heres what i've eat today ( will be similar most days )
Breakfast : bowl of fruit and fibre ( 100 g ) and 300 ml of semi skimmed milk.
Lunch : Roll and ham and a pack of softmints
Snack : Cheese sandwich and a low fat yogurt
Dinner : Mince and potatoes ( smaller than average family dinner - normally a curry or pasta based meal )
Snack : bowl of Kelloggs crunchy nut ( 100g ) and 300 ml of semi skimmed milk.
Overall : Around 2700 - 3000 calories a day
I'm trying to gain weight but in a healthy way. I have to go and see the doctor 3 months from now to see progress on weight gain.
Just would like to see what you guys think of what i'm eating... wethers its low or too much?
Congratulations on taking the step to reach out for help and adopt a healthier lifestyle. I went through an eating disorder when I was 16 (and didn't finally start to get better until about 20) so I can relate to what youre going through. Its a tough road but I'm proud of you to realize that you need to become healthier now instead of waiting until you have serious health issues.
If you want to gain healthy weight, the key is to eat alot, but stick to healthy foods. You might stick to foods like: oatmeal, whole wheat bread, whole wheat pastas, whole wheat couscous, whole wheat/high fiber cereals, sweet potatos, quinoa, legumes, fruits, veggies, chicken breast, red meats, low fat cheese, fish, tofu, turkey, eggs/eggwhites, nuts, nut butter, avacado, olives, olive oil, coconut oil, and flax.
I would recommend eating often and as much as you want. The key is to just try to stick to healthier foods as you don't want to start adopting bad habits now that you'll have to break later. Also, I don't care who you are it isn't healthy for anybody to fill their body with hydroginated oils, saturated fats, soda, and other crap that alot of people consume when they're trying to gain weight. Plus, by eating healthier I found that I had an easier time getting over eating disorder as I didn't feel as guilty as if I had tried to gain weight by chowing down on cheeseburgers and twinkies.
For your diet:
Breakfast : bowl of fruit and fibre ( 100 g ) and 300 ml of semi skimmed milk.
-How about a bowl of oatmeal, a few eggs/eggwhites, fruit and skimmed milk for this meal?
Lunch : Roll and ham and a pack of softmints
-Whole wheat roll, ham, veggies, and maybe a few slices of avacado or nuts for health fat
Snack : Cheese sandwich and a low fat yogurt
-looks good. Might throw in a few veggies too. :)
Dinner : Mince and potatoes ( smaller than average family dinner - normally a curry or pasta based meal )
-veggies here would be great too! :)
Snack : bowl of Kelloggs crunchy nut ( 100g ) and 300 ml of semi skimmed milk.
-You could buy some protein powder and mix a bit in with your milk on this meal to give you a bit more protein/calories
Have you thought about lifting weights to go with that new diet? This would allow you to put on a bit of muscle for a more toned look. Chicks dig the toned/muscular look. :)
I hope this helps John. Feel free to ask as many questions as necessary...
i would say its too low, but in your situation i understand you need to get used to eating more.
try making your brekkie a little bigger, maybe throw in a few eggs and a piece of fruit. this should be one of your biggest meals of the day, because youve been sleeping all night(unless your a vampire ) your body needs to refuel itself for the day ahead.
try have protein with every meal. examples of things you could have are:lean meats, chicken, beef or fish, low fat cheese, nuts etc. also try eat your veggies your last three meals, even if its small amounts-every little bit helps.
each week, gradually increase your portions of food,as from what youve said your having smaller portions than everyone else.
