starting out again at the beginning

Post by rebecca13 »

Prior to last year, I had a 9-year track record of working out nearly every day. However, I had a series of serious health issues and was out of commission for an entire year. Now I'm getting back into shape, and goodness it's HARD. I'm wondering if this is normal? I've started out doing an elliptical for 30 minutes at a time. I used to be able to work out pretty hard at a level 8 or 9, but right now I"m working out at resistance level 3 (I feel like a wimp) and I can get breathless if I push too hard. I also feel tired later in the day. It's been so long since I've been out of shape -- this too shall pass? How long will it take? And do you think this level of tiredness is normal at first? I'm also about 15 pounds overweight from lack of exercise last year and I'm sure that's not helping.

Six weeks. Mark it on your calendar.

I will take about 6 weeks for you to regain much of what you lost in conditioning. Schedule your workouts so that they progress from "easy" to "full out" gradually over that 6 week period of time.

It takes much longer to get in shape the first time; the body has a "memory" and it will allow you to get back in shape much quicker.

And, yes, it is always hard to come back.

Do it gradually and you will get the results well before the summer shows up.

Do it fast and you will either get injured or discouraged.
