I just read an article from this site about running 200 meters X 6 times @ 30sec. (with rest periods). Well that is pretty nice for say a high school sprinter who in competition probably runs about 23.5 (I was a highschool sprinter and that was how we would train).... 99% of real people in the real world can't run 200 meters in 30 seconds one time.
What are we trying to accomplish with intervals? Wouldn't it be easier to explain using heart rate targets? What is the goal of the interval, to reach anarobic heart rate? Keep it there for how long? Do I need to reach it on each speed interval?

rule number 1 (i have a lot of rule number 1's...) - don't think about things too much and definately don;t make them sound harder then what they actually are
if you can't run 200m in 30secs then you probably shouldn't be doing them...it's simply a suggestion as a way to so sprints/HIIT, hardly the only recommendation ever given
what will a heart rate monitor tell you? not much really...the goal of each interval is easy, sprint 200m within 30secs...if you canl;t then try something different (100 in 20secs etc) or simp,y do them for time (sprint 20secs, walk 40secs etc) or for distance (100m sprint, 200m jog etc)
