Is this unusual?

Post by Mummer »

I'm trying to incorporate HIIT into regime. I can get heart rate up to 85%-90% (151-160 bpm) of max(178) using a treadmill, usually by running at 6-8 mph for a couple of minutes. On a bicycle, however, I cannot get heart rate up past 134 bpm or so, no matter how fast or hard I work. I reach absolute muscle fatigue before heart rate cracks 135 bpm. Is this a common phenomenon?

Any insight appreciated.

I wouldn't be too concerned about that, I don't think it makes any difference. If you went higher than that on a regular basis, it might be indiciative of a Cardiac problem anyway.

Are you talking about an actual bicycle or a stationery bike?

your respiratory system is more conditioned then your muscles it seems...nothing to worry about but it seems you need to get stronger

Both. Or either. Same results on a gym stationary bike, road bike on a trainer and road bike on the road.

Don't you ever find that your glutes start hurting bad (I mean real bad) when your doing HIIT on a bike??

I'm with Milosz on this one. When I do HIIT on the stationary bike at the gym, glutes kill me and I am so out of breath. Increase your resistance, ride "up and off your butt", like your climbing a hill and you WILL feel the difference. You need to feel the burn, if you don't your taking a leisure bike ride threw the park.
