I believe your approach to this situation is bodybuilding. Which is perfectly fine although there are different approaches to all. Try to supplement pushups with dips for a circuit maybe 4 sets till failure and when you finish this try fly's on a swiss ball lite to allow proper stretch and super set that with incline db's. spice it with explosive push ups try to pop off the ground and slowly descend.
