Beer & weight/muscle gain

Post by kingo »

Hi..

I'm 5'11" tall slim man. From past 7 years weight is just constant, toggling between 66kgs-67Kgs (145 pounds approx), never even went 68 or 69 kgs......Now, as per height I guess weight should be approx around 72-75 kgs (i.e ~158-165 Pounds).....Now I want to increase weight & mucles & look hunk & builder.... Someone suggested to eat a lot & drink beer daily...Now I really want to know should I start drinking Beer or not...I'm 28 yrs old & never drank beer uptill now...Will drining everyday in anyway help me to gain weight?? I 'm not much of a exerciser & dont go
to Gym or workout. As such I'm fit but bit of in skinny category. just want to increase weight & bigger muscles........Your answers/e-mail regarding Beer consumption will be much appreciated...! Thanks..!

Whoever told you that is a bonehead, pure and simple.

If you don't drink beer, and I never have either, why the hell would you want to start caning your Liver, and increasing risk of Heart attacks, strokes, Cihrrosis etc etc?

Frankly, it's a good job you joined this site, because you will NEVER get lame brained advice like that here.

If you want to gain weight, do weights, and eat properly, do NOT start chugging back Beer. If that dude wants his Liver to pack in, or get a Heart attack, when he's 60+, let him, but it doesn't mean it has to be you.

Also, why give your Government more of your money, with alcohol taxes?

They probably don't spend public money as well as they should, do they? So why waste your health and money, because if you get a drinking related condition, years from now, will all the alcohol tax money you give your Government, ensure you get a hospital bed as fast as you want or need it?

NO.

So stay tee total. Drinking is a mugs game.

Big respect to you for never drinking. Trust me, you're doing right bro 8)

Alcohol dehydrates you, and in your state, drinking is likely to just cause Fat gains, off the Alcohol sugars, as your Metabolism, would probably not cope properly with the calories. Also whacking a lot of calories like that into yourself, could result in vomiting, even off maybe 1-2 pints, even 2 bottles of light beer is apparently almost 200 calories.

I don't believe it's going to make you hungry. It would mean if you slightly accelerate the dehydration process, you would have to replace the water you lose, which can be done with food, but also from pure water sources, but also drinking all that Beer, is going to make you urinate more, meaning more Salts, increasing your risk of Cramps.

All that stuff about you could get run over tomorrow, live life to the full, is often taken the wrong way. Especially when you get 80 year old men who live like crap, and somehow are still alive. and young healthy people who die playing Squash, It gives false confidence to people, who don't care much about their own bodies, and another weapon against health conscious people.

So again, you do well not to drink. Don't succumb dude, you've been strong for years, it should be natural now, like it is for me, so don't go there, it could lead to a whole world of bad news.

Once a day eating is not ideal.

As your Metabolism is not probably firing correctly, you need to gradually increase it slowly.

I suggest 5 tiny mini meals, and your usual meal a day. Go with those for about 1 week, then increase the portions of the mini meals.

Have the meals 2.5-3 hours apart.

This is how you could do it.

Roughly 40 calories with each new meal, but daily intake increases by 200 calories a day.

I want to do this softly softly approach and not say, 100 calories or 150, as your body might not take to such calories too well, so slight gradual healthy adjustment, is the key here I feel.

So this is how you can do this. Bearing in mind with approximately 40 calories a meal, you will be limited in food choices for the first week.

Say you want a small meal for Breakfast, and a Bloodsugar spike, this is how it could be achieved.

15 grapes, (6g Carbs / 24 calories)
1 Scrambled Egg White, (2.5 g Protein / 10 calories)
1 Almond (0.6g Fats / 7 Calories), total calories 41.

Have the Fruit about 10-15 minutes pre meal to prevent Putrifaction in the Gut. This will allow the Fruit to pass better into the intestines giving it this bit of time.

The 1 Almond looks a bit weird, but you get a tiny amount of good Fat there, which could help.

For snacks between meals.

Have 1/2 glass of Skimmed Milk. Approximately 4 g Protein, 6g Carbs, (40 calories).

Depending on whether your 1 meal is Lunch or Dinner, have this as the other meal.

1/2 OZ (15g approx), Sliced Turkey (2.5g Protein / 10 calories / 1.3g Fat / 12 calories)
1/2 Cup Broccoli, (1.25 g Protein / 5 Calories, 3g Carbs / 12 calories), total calories 40 approx.

Then later on about 9PM, have another snack.

1/2 OZ Low Fat Cheese (3.4 g protein / 0.25g Carbs / 24 calories / 1g Fat / 9 calories)
Small Tomato (0.8g Protein / 3 calories / 3.6 g Carbs / 14 calories)
Total calories 41.

Like I say I don't want your body reacting to the calorie increases, so for first week, cals are approximately 40 a go.

This meal plan is good for a few reasons.

A: A small Bloodsugar spike first thing.

B: 2 Fruit, and a leafy Veg sources.

C: Good Calcium intake, and a bit of Fat.

I'm hoping this will work, and it's simple enough to do, so you shouldn't have any problems.

In a week, when your Metabolism is adjusted I'll try and up calories a little more.

Good luck :).

Again thanks a ton Boss Man...! I have intensions/plans of gaining muscles within next 4-6 months max till Dec 07 where I plan to get marred :D

I heard/read from web site that one needs 500 EXTRA calories/day i.e 3500 calories/week in EXTRA to gain extra weight of 1 Pound...Now that said it seems that one needs to eat like anything he has ate before..So I guess how can I get those EXTRA calories. The solution to this I read was high protein intake by drinking like protein shakes (whay, soy powder etc)...Now will it be a good idea to do drink protein shakes to get that EXTRA calories? Is this product better for health & has no side effects?

Vitamin Shoppe

Should I buy this (link above) or similar type of products instead of Beer?? If you are aware about such type of muscle growth accelerator products please let me know? Or if in your opinion there's something else which I should buy for accelerating muscle growth (without harming health in other way i.e no side effects & which can be used without consultation of doctor) plz let me know..!...Thankssssss a lot for your prompt replies....!

Yes swanso5, I agree muscles can't be build without work & I'm now almost made mind about to do weight exercise/push ups everyday..But if you go through prev message I now want to know about the mucle accelerator/protein intake product for gaining extra calories to gain weight..If I don't gain weight How will I do weights?? ..I dont mind even if I get as is almost falt now  I have bit of V shaped chest but again its too flat  ..I can work out for simultaneously as I grow or gain weight..

So I was wondering that will that protein power (as in the link) help me in anyway along with exercise? i want to see faster results within a month or two..!

a protein shake won't build muscles...effort in the gym will an appropriate nutrition...go to refernce section ans read "your body is a barbell" and try that program for starters but even if you workout like e dmeon for the next 2 months chances are you'll get stronger but not bigger...think long term man

Thanks swanso5, so you mean I should neither go for Beer nor go for whey or protein shakes or similar type of products & should continue with normal day to day diet as I'm doing before from past several years?? Also can you give me the link for the topic "your body is a barbell" in the referebce section as you mentioned?? I couldn't find it..!

Kingo.

The diet measures I suggested, it would be preferable to do. Your diet is not good enough to use Protein Powder. You eat once a day, hence why I suggested those extra 40 calorie meals for you, which I would be increasing after 1 week.

I would also not start any exercise programme yet. Your calorie intake is almost certainly not sufficient to exercise properly. you don't want increased Metabolic burn, as that 1 meal, coupled with the extra 200 calories a day, (in the way I suggested), would mean you'd probably be getting 300-600 calories a day.

You don't want to burn any of those calories, as you need them right now. You're in danger of getting bad Teeth and Bones, poor Muscle condition etc etc, from eating one meal a day.

Hang fire on the weights until your calorie intake has been bumped up some more. I'd say around 2-3 weeks maybe 4 from now.

All being well the changes I made, can stimulate your appetite, and then week by week of gradual Metabolic adjustment, will hopefully get you back on a better calore intake, and diet regime.

Currently, using reccomendations, you can't afford to sacrifice any of those precious extra calories, revving up your Metabolism with weights or Cardio. I don't think your Metabolism is healthy enough, to be given additional changes like that.

Beer is off limits, like I said before, as you don't need it, and so are Protein shakes. Protein shakes are supplements, not a key dietry requirement, so until your calorie intake is more regular, and you have potentially some calories you could sacrifice in a healthy way, I strongly suggest no exercise.

Sorry bud, but you need time to correct the problems you've gotten your body into. You're borderline Anorexic probably, and continuation of this kind of eating pattern you've been on, could mean there's a slight risk, you'll never see your 35th birthday alive.

Sorry to sound so shocking.

So burning calories from Exercise, can't be an option right now, until Metabolism is healthier, and eating is better okay :).

So please go with plan for a week, and hopefully you'll be able to do it with any side effects, and then you can have some more calories next week yeah :).

Thanks Boss Man...! I'm noting down on a paper what I'm eating everyday on a paper pasted on the wall in kitchen....Again, I'm a vegeterian (but I do eat eggs, but no meat) but anyways, I'll try to follow up the diet steps you mentioned above & let you know if there is any change in weight (current 66 Kgs) after a week or two....!

Okay, if you're not a Meat eater. Switch the Turkey for another Scrambled Egg White, and have a couple of Almonds instead to get the Fats.

Bodyweight stuff possibly, but again if it stimulates Metabolic increases, which I think it will quite a bit, (obviously less than resistance stuff), it could be a risk, with his low level of Calorie intake.

I think given that's a bodyweight system Kingo, perhaps hang fire for a couple of weeks, then when calories have been increased further, I'm hoping by then, to have you at the start of week 3, to be on triple the calories I suggested now, you could perhaps do bodyweight stuff, then in another 2-3 weeks later, get resistance work under your belt.
