I've noticed water retention the day after strength training.
Is this normal?
Two days later, I release the water. Totally crazy, making trips to the bathroom every two hours for about eight hours and then everything settles back down to normal. The first time I thought I had a urinary tract infection yet I had no symptoms. After it repeatedly occurred two days after strength training, I knew there must be some type of connection.
I drink close to 20 - 8 ounce glasses of water per day. I've always been good about water intake. I'm not into drinking tea, coffee, and sodas. Never have been.

I would suggest 6 things.
1. You're drinking perhaps too much water on training days or more than usual.
2. You're losing a bit of weight and it's partly water weight as well, which if you'd also altered your diet and cut salt significantly, could have triggered a partial loss of water retention.
3. If you recently started drinking energy drinks and they contained caffeine, caffeine acts as a diuretic, which could cause you to pee a bit more.
4. You may have started taking some kind of supplement with caffeine in it and one or more other diuretic ingredients, or one or more diuretic ingredients, none of which are caffeine, or that may be caffeine containers like yerba mate or guarana.
5. You've taken some kind of medication that has a diuretic effect either on it's own, or possibly when you have taken a supplement and / or caffeinated drink and used the medication.
6. You've been using creatine and caused water retention, but cycled off potentially causing water loss, as something like monohydrate or kre-alkalyn can contribute to water retention, but CEE, (Creatine Ethyl Esther), supposedly doesn't.

Hi Boss Man,
Thank you for the informative post.
I didn't know that guarana was caffeine in disguise. Oh darn. That's what is going on. I've been eating this turkey jerky, lower sodium than most, and it has guarana in it. I'm sensitive to something in caffeine. It makes me bloat up. So there's the problem. Yikes!
Is it true that you should drink half your weight in water (fluids) per day?
An additional question: Do I need to add a protein powder to diet to improve muscle growth? I find it hard to get the protein I need. I'm going to add beans back into diet and that should help too. I used to eat them often. favorite was adzuki beans because they're high in protein and potassium.
As always, thank you for your time.

Protein powder is not necessary but can help.
If you chose one stick to one with around 5-6 ingredients as often many are costly with tonnes of ingredients and they're unnecessary. Plus some have "proprietary blends", which means all the ingredients in that blend do not have to be stated for quantities, so you could be overpaying for something that doesn't justify the price tag.
If a powder tastes a bit funny, try things like vanilla essence, ground ginger, ground nutmeg, honey, cinnamon and mocha powder to perk it up.
As for the guarana, yes it has caffeine in it.
