Starting journey... again.

Post by Abi_150 »

Hi! I'm new to the board but not the to road to fitness. Have been on healthy side of weight now on the morbidly obese side. I recently looked into bariatric surgery, and got scared. Have a doctor consult scheduled, however. But first wanted to do weight watchers for a fourth time. Goal weight is -100 lbs. I know without a mind set change it's not possible. In terms of programs have done NutriSystem and attempted couch to 5k and got halfway through it but took very long. So I am very discouraged with lack of personal dedication. I know it comes from me sticking to it. I am totally open to suggestions as to advice on how to change the bad to good. Fitness and diet are at forefront and I've heard good things about Fitbit as a tool in the journey. Any and all ideas welcome though!

Hi there Abi, it's great to speak to you.

Firstly, I would strongly advise against bariatric surgery. Despite what any surgeon says, it's completely unnecessary to give anybody that, as surgery should only ever be offered as a last resort, to a condition where no other option can be given or such options failed and weight loss doesn't need surgery as a treatment, or every overweight person before it existed would have stayed that way, so the surgery is a falsehood.

When you say goal weight is -100lbs I assume you mean the weight needed to lose, not the weight to eventually be at, as that would be too low and aiming for around 110lbs - 120lbs would be a sensible target.

As for trying ot be motivated so many things spring to mind.

1. Writing down motivation words / phrases other people have said.

2. Writing down motivation words / phrases you say about yourself, like I WILL SUCCEED or I CAN DO IT as examples.

3. Training with a friend, work colleague or relative.

4. Listening to music.

5. Changing the kind of cardiovascular exercise you do, I:E interval instead of steady state.

6. Increasing the intensity of weightlifting I:E 2 sets of 10 with 50%-100% more weight per exercise, not 1 set of 15.

7. Motivational CD's

8. Clubs like running clubs.

9. Keeping journals relating to things you do that are public so you're accountable to others.

10. Getting a reputable trainer to help you.

Those are some ideas to get you thinking.

As for diet and exercise, anything you want to ask us please feel free :).
