eating alot, but not enough calories?

eating alot, but not enough calories?
What would you body do if say you were eating alot, but say you weren't getting enough calories (like if you only ate protien shakes and fruit for a day). Would the motabilism slow and your body prepare for starvation, like what happens when you only eat a meal or two a day, or would the motabilism and body fuctions stay the same despite a large calorie deficit?
