It is actually quite cheap and easy to make your own supplements. I have some good recipes if your interested.

Yes, supplement cost are on the rise. I own an athletic supplement company. I bet you can guess which one. 
Now we do offer extremely high quality ingredients and we do not put any fillers in our products, so we are going to be expensive either way, but yes, they are on the rise.
In the supplement industry like most others, you get what you pay for. If you go to Walmart and buy the cheapest whey, chances are that is not going to be the "healthiest" choice. So it comes down to how much are you willing to spend for clean, quality products. Also, buying direct from a companies site is almost never the best idea. Their prices are hiked so high because the discount places will not carry them if the original website is a competitor. The original website has to have obscene prices so the discount places can look like its a huge discount to the consumer.
Now with all that said, if you know enough about the products you are taking or want to take, there are places on the web you can "custom" design a jug of product. But do not expect it to taste fantastic or have the packaging look good. It is a great resource to test out an ingredient for cheep or make a blend that doesn't exist yet.
