unsure of required calorie burn for weightless

Post by brontem92 »

Hello everybody!
I'm just hoping someone will be able to help me out, I've gained weight this year and have hit some kind of massive plateau and haven't been able to lose the weight since. I've decided that tracking calories could be the answer. However I'm just wondering roughly how many a day should I be burning to lose about 500grams a week? I'm consuming about 1200 a day, and aiming to burn about 500-600 calories everyday. Would this be adequate to lose weight? or should I be looking at increasing both intake and burn?
Any advice would be amazing!!

Hi Bronte, good to talk to you :).

Personally I think your caloric intake should go up.

Sedentary females need around 1,800 calories a day and you could include another 200-300 for exercise.

If you consume what you do currently, the lack of nutrients could cause a small amount of anemia risk for example, based on iron content consumed and abosrbed, but the biggest potential problem could be to bones, as things like calcium, vit D, vit K2, phosphorus, magnesium, Vit C, etc etc, have direct or indirect effects on skeletal health and if the bones were allowed to thin too much, the stresses and impact on the bones from exercise might encourage a small fracture of some kind.

Also your body could be going into a starvation mode, where it thinks it's being starved and won't relinquish any fat.

Plus if you are not careful you could burn a bit of muscle via exercise and as 1lb of added muscle burns an extra 45-50 calories a day, so the reverse could be true, where you lose muscle and gain some fat, but you might not realise this if your weight stayed the same, but then you'd be stimulating a more negative body composition.
