Well, I can't tell you about weight lifting, I know very little. However, I train a little bit of MMA (cause I enjoy it) and mostly Gracie Jiu Jitsu.
If you want to workout for the reason of fighting alone, you will want to have very good muscle endurance and cardio. Beach muscles (as in weight lifters and such) don't have a very good shape for fighting or endurace sports such at being on the mat. Bulky muscles get very heavy (so to speak) after the first few minutes on the mat or in a cage.
im a big fan of mma but i don't train for it or anything like that, just watch the fights. from what i have seen, alot of the pros don't lift alot of weights except for heavy lifting like deadlifts and squats (compound movements only). i think they mainly do bodyweight exercises like hindu pushups and pullups, etc. for muscular endurance. you might try the hammer down strength program by chad waterbury. never tried it personally, sorry if i couldn't be more help.
