pace myself or push myself?
Healthy female, 28 years old, 5'4", 118 pounds, resting HR 80-85. I eat well, but have poor stamina which I want to change. method in the past has been to get on the treadmill (walking on an incline) three times a day, ten minutes at a time. Is this even effective? I see weight loss shows on television where the obese are pushed to their maximum limit. Should I be pushing myself until I can barely put one foot in front of the other, and where breathing is very heavy? After ten minutes of walking, heart is beating quite fast, I'd say around 155.

I'd just back the Cardio up. 3 x 30 minute sessions 5 days a week. 3 lots of 10 minutes a day, might work, but may be a bit much.
You can split the Cardio doing it 5 days a week for 30 minutes, by doing 3 days back to back, 1 off, 2 days back to back and 1 off, as 5 days back to back will just cause 2 days of back to back nothingness eating into progress.

Your theoretical max heart Rate is 192. Even at 85% you would only be at 163. I would warm-up for 5 minutes then go up to a pace that is somewhat challenging. Try to add 10% per week to your mileage. Once you can continue for 30 consecutive minutes you can start working on interval training. (alternating fast and slow segments). 3 times a week should be adequate as part of your overall program.

A personal trainer who doesn't take into account the resting HR, interesting. If one takes into account the AGE & RHR @ 85 BPM..85 % would be 192.
220 - 28 ( age ) ( - 85 ( RHR ) x .85 % ) + 85 = 192
That is a high resting HR.

Well I confess I'm a smoker and Resting HR is 66 beats per minute. I'm 26 5ft 9 So I think your 80-85 bpm is very high for a Resting HR.
