Trying to get six pack abs

Post by seatownz »

Hi everyone.. I'm new here and I'm working out hard and eating right to get six pack abs before I get too old to do it..LOL..
I started over a year ago with weight at 175 lbs (age: 43, height 5' 9").. now I'm at 155 lbs.. :)
I got good results at first 5-6 months but seems like not much changes for the past few months..
what am I doing wrong? not enough protein? I'm taking around 100-125 grams daily.. is that good?
please advice to help me get that six pack abs.

Thanks

I eat lots of fruits and veggies.. I don't eat much meat and eggs because of high cholesterol but drink protein shakes with meals..
I stopped eating at fastfood places.. I haven't touch burgers or pizzas the whole year..but i do like to eat thai and chinese food but moderately..
I also take protein shake after workouts.. and I eat small meal portions about 4-5 times a day..

Thai and Chinese won't do you many favors. The sauces, delicious though they may be (I'm a huge sucker for Thai, and I live next to a restaurant, I walk by it every day, ugh), are generally fatty and sugary. And not the good kind of fatty and sugary.

Cholesterol issues generally mean you should watch saturated fat intake, so limiting fatty meats is a good way to go. Have you tried soluble fiber interventions? They are effective in certain individuals ( step mother is one, she got off her meds just by eating oatmeal!) Cardio can also raise your HDL levels, though again, only in certain populations. Some people also see positive results with the use of n-3 FAs. Flax, fish, nuts or supplements can help with your intake if it is low.

Protein should be no more than about 30-35g at a time, any more than that and it will get wasted, since you can only use so much at once.

Does that help any?
Yes, you're helping me a lot.. thank you for taking your time..
I'm also trying to eat more fiber but somehow I don't like eating oatmeal.. LOL.. I have bags and bags of oatmeal in pantry just sitting there..
Anyway, cholesterol has come down quite a bit.. it used to be as high as 290 when I was in 30s.. good thing good cholesterol is high also.. last time I checked, it was down to 230 but doctor said it's still too high.. I have another test coming up in January and if it is still high, doctor will put me on medicaiton and i don't want that..
BTW, I've been to Miami/Ft.Lauderdale area many times.. a lot of great Thai places to eat!
Thanks again for ur help..

Oatmeal Protein Shake? That's a good idea.. I'll give it a try..
So getting the six pack at age is still possible? or is it the best I can do?
But I'm going to watch diet and workout regularly no matter what..

Thanks so much.. you rock! :D

How to make oatmeal quite tasty: A teaspoon of honey, make it with skim milk not water, blueberries (put a couple of scoops in the bowl before you pour the oatmeal over), sprinkle a few raisins and some cinnamon over. Now this isn't sugarfree (honey, milk), but at least it's something that's alot more tasty than plain old oats boiled in water, yuck.

Hey les when you add oatmeal to your shake how much do you usually add? I was going to try it last week but i chickened out. I don't really like oatmeal cereal, either. And you say you smash it up? Or did you just mean when you mixed it up together it got all smashed. I can't see that tasting good but i wish it would because that would be a nice way to get it in. :)

Yum! Oatmeal Protein shake sounds good... I'm going to have to try that one!

I usually do shakes with frozen strawberries/mango/papaya/pineapple + one scoop protein powder + ice + 1/2 C of 2% milk. Sometimes I'll add in a little coconut milk instead of plain milk depending on sugar intake for the day. And if I'm needing fiber, I mix in a tablespoon of benefiber.

Rebekah, if you're not fussed about Oatmeal, try bying Oats, like roleld or steel cut and crushing them instead. a rolling pin will suffice aor possibly a wooden mallet and if you have a clear plastic bag of some kind, or a bit of sellophane / shrink wrap to put them in, all the better, to keep them where you want them, while you pulverise them into bits.

You might get away with a grinder, normally used for something like Flaxseeds, but I'm not sure about that, as the Oats might possibly be a bit too big.

Fygle has an interesting take on Protein shakes with the bit of Honey and Cinnamon. I don't add anything to mine, but do advocate both of those, for people who have mild taste issues with theirs. Same things with Vanilla essence, groung Ginger and groung Nutmeg. Just little things to boost the quality of your shakes up.
