Eliptical Question

Hello, first day here on shapefit and this is an awesome and FREE site! Anyways, I had a question. The eliptical loos fun, at least more than a treadmill. I tried it for the first time today and only lasted around 2 minutes on it. Is it normal to feel weak and shaky in legs? I mean, thighs were just burning which was the reason I stopped! Is this normal at first? Or is it because I need to run for a few weeks maybe for me to not feel that burn? Thanks!

Always tough at first, it'll get easier for sure. Maybe lower resistance?

Yes I agree with Fygle and make sure your muscles are warmed up before hand, I'd keep going with the Eliptical, just take it steady and work your way up. I used to have an eliptical trainer a few years back and used it so much the bolts sheared off, thats home gym equipment for you. Anyway good luck :)

I'd politely disagree on that :). The Burn is Anerobic Metabolism, which means the Pyruvate created from Glucose and Glycogen breakdown, is being turned into Lactic Acid and Ethanol Alcohol. The more Oxygen present, the more Pyruvate that can be sent to things like the Krebs cycle and other biological systems, that I admit to knowing little about.

I'm not trying to tell you how to suck eggs, as I would ascertain from your profile, you may know this anyway, but I couldn't be 100% sure so I posted it anyway :).

Again no disprespect intended and thanks for posting some of the things you have done, it's really and honestly appreciated, so I hope you stick around, because we'd very much like to have you around :).

As an afterthought, you mention the elliptical being the lowest impact Cardio, in terms of Patellofemoral health, but what would your thoughts on the Recumbent exercise bike be, as to me, having something that takes body weight away from the Knees, as opposed to vertical Cardio types that loadbear it onto Knees, would be less impacting, but I'd be happy to have your own personal viewpoint :).

Good point. You're right of course, type of training is only worthwhile in relation to the goal.

However some people espouse sports specific training theories. Most of which I think are potentially rubbish, because I don't think there's any sport that requires 100% unique training programmes, with 0% replication of anything, in relation to other sports, with the possible exceptions of Synchronised Swimming and Table Tennis, where you'd train in ways, none of which you'd do in any other sport.

Indeed, but essentlally you will get some crossover, with one or more other sports on some of the methodology or techniques used. Sports specific training, to me implies doing things entirely unique to one sport and as I said, except for possibly Synchronised Swimming and Table Tennis, I fail to see this being a worthy piece of terminology.

Put it this way, we've had people here before asking what muscles do I need to train for boxing, or better punching speed or martial arts etc?

Answer, same as you would for general bulking. You wouldn't favour some muscles more than others. Even growth all over with weight training, pretty much whatever you do it for be it just for size or for sport as well.
