Until recently most boxers were anti-weightlifting. They were convinced that lifting would slow down the hands. It is not certain at all that he ever did any weightlifting.
Indeed, when I was in college only football players did any substantial lifting. Even wrestlers didn't lift.
It used to be that I could tell people what sport they played just by looking at their bodies. You cannot do that anymore because almost all athletes lift weights.
Take a look at the basketball players of the 1950s and 1960s and you will see a bunch of ectomorphs with almost no muscle mass. Compare that with the players today.
Weight lifting as a training tool for athletics is something that developed over the last 40 years.
