New to supplements and feel i've hit a weight-loss wall

Post by Aidan »

I've been working on losing some weight for the past few months (went from 180 to 140lbs so far!) fiance is also trying to workout a bit and build some muscle. He's always been a really lean guy. We went into a GNC shop looking at supplements and it's a bit overwhelming at first glance.

We ended up buying some Opt. Nutrition 100% Whey stuff after reading a few reviews on amazon. I also found good things said about it on this forum before registering. I've been a lurker for awhile! Anyway, it's not favorite to drink..not a fan of the taste. Occasionally I don't have time to eat breakfast before going to work so I've started buying muscle milk from a local corner store and really like it. It seems high in fat though and it's pricey for what you get. I do remember they sold this powder at GNC..and thought about picking something up. I don't eat a lot of fatty-foods anyway so maybe it would be all right? A guy at GNC also tried to sell me some stuff called HPC-3 by Eightball but I couldn't find much about it online.

I've seemed to hit a wall as far as weight loss goes and would love suggestions on what to try. I eat pretty well..I don't really stick to a strict diet or anything like atkins or fad-diets but I just try to eat healthy.. no sodas or fast food and things like that..lots of veggies and lean meat. main bad habit is sweets but I can usually cure a craving with a fruit bar or yogurt. I run 2-3 miles 5 times a week... and try to get to the gym to do strength training about 3 times a week. Is this not enough? I stick to about 1500 calories a day. I probably don't eat enough times during the day since I work quite a bit.. and a shake or something like that would be ideal for me since I don't have time to stop and make something while working.

I'm really wanting to hit 115/120lbs. I'm about 5'3 and 140lbs currently. I'm getting married in November so that's main goal.. but hoping to make this a lifestyle change. I was always active many many years and and somewhere along the way I just stopped working out and eating right. Thanks for reading..appreciate any advice.

Firstly, I'd avoid the HPC-3 stuff. It's just loaded with Micronurients, probably to ramp the price up. You'd be better off with a decent digestible multi-vit, stacked with a basic Protein and Carbs, if you wanted to, because you would get more nutrients in it like Carotenoids and possibly a few other things, that the HPC stuff won't give you and doing that may be potentially cheaper anyway.

Then you have the option of both or buying just a powder.

Breakfast is not too hard, just have a bowl of Cereal and some Scrambled Egg Whites and a Yolk, or a portion of Low Fat Cheese or Peanuts, or a sandwich, with things like Ham, Chicken, Turkey etc. Quick simple fayre.

You actually look really superb and I'm sure you'll have no problems losing the last bit of weight.

Muscle building can help too, because 1lb of extra muscle can burn an extra 45-50 calories too. 3 times a week is fine if you're total body work, other 4-5 times for splits, though you can pair muscles and do 3x a week, I.E. Legs / Biceps, Chest / Triceps, Back / Shoulders for example.

As for the diet, yes you're a bit low on the calories in lieu of the exercise too. Sedentary females need 1,800 a day, so coupled with regular type exercise you're looking at another 300-400 on top, so you have some spare calories to burn.

As long as you're protein is good, I'd say around 1g per lb of bodyweight, you be getting stronger in no time.

A lot of females live with a misnomer or stigma about strength, because they think it will make them look manly and many waste 20-30 mintues in the gym, doing sometimes random and often not progressive stuff, that's the same all the time and it's great to see someone like you committing to something solid and realistic, because the results WILL be a healthy and a good looking thing and the results WILL enhance your great looks :).

I hope that things work out for you in every respect including the relationship. I can tell you're someone who is quite human, by the attitude you displayed in your post, but also by the fact you have one of those faces that is a wonderful window to your inner self and I know if you can make this commitment lifelong and love yourself like you deserve to, you will make good things happen and prove that there is love enough for you too as well as your intended.

You should be proud of rekindling your attempts at good wellbeing and I feel a sense of pride for you too and now is not the time to chastise for what you might see as a mistake by letting things slide, but for focusing on the positives and focusing on the strong healthy body you DESERVE to own and I'm sure you WILL own and WILL achieve, if you persevere and stick at it :).

It's great to see someone like you on here and again I wish you a lot of luck in everything you do. Whatever support you want for as long as you want it, consider us here for you and willing and able to give you the support and encouragement you've proven you deserve from us.

Keep us updated when you can okay, as the more you do, the more we can help :).

I'm sure you are going to look every inch the beautiful bride and I have a hunch you and your intended will make a terrific couple and you seem like the sort of person who deserves a lot of love and happiness, so stick at this and remember, this is for life and that you ARE capable of giving it that much consistency and attention :).

Chin up and no worries okay :).
