run with sore legs

Post by geoalehay »

We all know the story - went for a run yesterday, pulled up a little tight this morning.

So the questions: to run again the next day or not?

Stretch and walk. If it loosens up nicely, then a short slow jog for a bit and see how you feel tomorrow.

But remember to stretch after the walk/jog and a hot bath afterwards would not hurt either.

You might try a 5-10 minute bike warm up before running or treadmill. I was having terrible ankle pain and then calves tightening up when doing HIIT on the treadmill. Today I rode the bike 7 minutes before the treadmill and it wasn't until about 25 minutes on the treadmill, ankle started to hurt...but usually it hurts within 10 minutes and severely...today it ws 25 minutes and barely hurt.

warm ups are important, they help the joints loosen and the blood start flowing at an increased level to better feed your muscles with oxygen and take away all the waste products produced during excercise.

Think of your heart and the rest of your muscles as toffee. When its cold and you bend it --- snap!, when it is warmed up and you bend it ---- stretch! This is also why you should stretch after a workout rather than as a warm up ;)

cheers

Do lots of stretching the next day and go for a walk instead too.

Because you could run your risk of a bad injury if you ran on really sore legs the next day.

This. Listen to what your body is telling you. I train very frequently but when I feel a very sluggish running day coming on, I don't hesitate to take a day or two off. I always come back stronger after the break.
