Incredibly weak triceps...

Post by TockyB »

I do 3 sets of dips and 3 sets of tricep extensions on chest/tricep day and have only been able to crank out 1 rep per set on tricep extensions, and I'm only using a 10lb dumbbell :(. This has been going on for a long time now and I can't seem to increase the strength of the long head of left arm, the right arm seems to be ok but I can't increase the weight till both arms are equal. It's just a problem with left tricep long head as I have improved on all other lifts, just not this one :|. Can anyone suggest what exercises I can do to get this muscle growing? I was thinking of doing the 'grease the groove' method with this exercise but wanted some other oppinions first.
Thanks,
Tocky

You might be overdoing it. Don't forget that if you use Pressing movements, I.E. Bench Press, you will be working the Triceps to some extent, so you might be actually doing too much stunting the growth potential of your Triceps.

Try removing 1 set off the Dips and Extensions and just doing 2 of each and see if that helps at all.

Close grip bench presses workout your triceps with heavy weight. This exercise trains the chest too that's why you're able to add more weight. To focus on triceps, don't lower the bar too much (touch chest). :D

Be aware though, that because close grip use more Tricep recruitment, you'd be advised to cut back on the weight, as your usual amount could be too hard.

It might take you a set or two, maybe even a session or two to find a new weight, by adding a bit more each time, but it's safer that way than just assuming you can lift as much and possibly getting a nasty shock.

Yup, good point bossman. Start with what you can handle and slowly work your way upwards.
