lunges squats bad for weight loss

Post by loislane »

right now i have a question, and need to settle mind, over an article i read not so long ago, it was one of those get fit for your shape type pieces were the writer goes on to describe female body shapes and the good and not so good things to do etc etc.
myself being a pear shape (smaller top half and larger hips) do cardio dutifully and also do lunges spuats and uphill jogs etc all in a bid to lose weight and tone up. all of which the magazine said are a big no no for pear type shapes, only aerobic exercise and light toning on the lower half is what should we should partake in
Now i was under the impression that as a woman you cannot bulk up and need to build a bit of muscle via exercises such as these to help burn the fat, now as you can imagine i am slightly confused, any coments welcome :) :!:

Ignore articles that claim certain exercises are not good for females. There is no such weightlifting resistance exercise that can be called a exercise, absolutely none that I have ever heard of.

Some exercises may require very good condition for a female body, before tangible results with the exercise can be achieved, I.E Pull-ups as opposed to assisted pull-ups. A female body has all the same muscles as a one, or it flipping well should do, so any exercises with weights you do on it, providing the muscles, connective tissues and bones can tolerate it, will yield potential in terms of muscle growth, reshaping or defining.

Therefore it doesn't matter if your body is pear shaped, or broad shoulders, or love handles, or bhudda or whatever, you'll still be able to perform any resistance exercise with weights, that a can do, as long as your body can tolerate it.

thanks guys, boss man i particulary like the buddha reference  i thought it was a load of bollocks,!! but i was suprised seeing as it wasn't a womens glossy, rather a health magazine from a leading health and suppliment high street store. but considering weight loss is ultimate goal, could, in your opinion be too much? or what sort of strengthining vs cardio ratio should i be doing? i mean sister who also is into exercising has very quick muscle tone development, it doesnt take much for her to get arm definition, but she runs alot and has thus developed clear hamstring muscles i would prefer a sleeker more streamlined toning, if that makes any sense :D what would you guys suggest??

Do a full body workout.Though its wise to start off with building of the connective tissue, before putting on muscle which would start you in the endurance repetition range.
Sets of 2 or 3 ..12 - 15 reps for 6 weeks

Chest press at comfortable weight

Squats, lunges or step ups ( step ups are excellent for keeping your HR elevated )

Shoulder press

Seated, bent or one arm row

Hamstring curls on a ball or machine

Back extensions on a ball

Core

Single leg drops

Superman on hands & knees or on ball

Prone plank 30 - 60 second hold

Side planks or oblique engagement of some type, google & see what works for you & keeps you less bored.

It is important when starting out on a lean body mass building program to engage & strengthen the core muscles to provide your body with proper stabilization & correct posture.

You might want to have a posture & core analysis by a trainer to see if there are any areas of concern BEFORE starting,Good luck ! :)
