No, a 3 mile out & back run is running 1.5 miles, turning around and running back 1.5 miles. The negative split part means that i ran the 1.5 miles back faster than the first 1.5 miles.

Yesterday evening went with son out to the race route of our 5K coming up later this month. They had part of it blocked off doing some construction, but we were able to run over half of it. I always like to run the race route before a race to learn the hills and the course, so I know what to expect. There is one LONG hill on the course that I wanted him to run, so he can learn how to power up a hill and rest on the downhill without losing any speed. We had a good run, did some good conditioning, ran the hill and enjoyed the long winding downhill.

Fridays workout: 2.5 miles

Today's workout: 3.0 miles
Ran just over 2.5 miles (with son) on a very hilly course. Teaching him how to run hills, so when race day comes he will be able to handle that long upgrade hill.
We ran 2.5 miles, then walked/jogged another .5 miles to cooldown. Very proud of boy - he stuck with it even when he felt he couldn't go on (we all face those moments) he ran through it. We actually passed 2 other runners - younger women than myself, they had to stop and walk the hills, and we powered past them. Then one of the women started running again - son looks back and says "hurry Mom, she gaining on us!!" He picked up our pace, and after a minute or two, he looked back again, and she was walking....HA! Left her in our dust, we did. I don't know where he gets that competitive spirit from....
I told him (because these ladies were younger and actually slimmer than me) that "It's not the size, or the speed, but the will to succeed, that makes a true athlete" He gave me one of those rare looks that made me feel like the coolest mom on the planet - just for that moment in time. It was great. :D

Another thing you could have said is, "just because they're thin, doesn't mean they'll win."

Thanks Edgar.
He should be running again with me tomorrow a.m. - I am finding out that he is NOT a morning person (except on the days when I want to sleep late!)

Todays workout:

6:15 a.m.
3 mile out & back run
Time: 31:40
Wasn't trying for a faster time today - just wanted to run well. It is supposed to get down into the 40's later this week...that's when I'll try for faster time - trying to break that 30 minute mark! 8)

He does like to run with me....but finds it difficult to drag himself out of bed before daylight - must be a pre-teen thing.

Todays workout:

Hill work
Ran parts of the 5K race course, working on powering up the hills, pumping arms, shortened stride, then "resting" but actually running faster on the downhills. Slightly leaned forward letting bodyweight "pull" me downhill, relaxed shoulders & arms, quickening pace without exerting any extra effort - letting the downhill do the work.

Ran two 1 mile repeats, with the second one being about 15 secs. faster, then jogged 1/2 mile for recovery.

This was view as I ran that last half mile:

Cellphone pic. I thought it was so beautiful the way the sun was shining above and then coming through at the bottom of the tree line over the lake. :D

todays workout:

lunchtime park run
3 mile interval run / repeat of last weeks run:

From October 4th: Ran a total of 3 miles, split into 3 sections, which I will use in the future to compare times with. First timed stop was at 10:36 (guesstamating about 1.10 mile) stopped watch, 1 min. rest, stretch, started back - Second timed stop was at 17:18 -1 min. rest, Third timed stop was at 24:47 - approx 2.5 mile mark.
Fourth and Final stop time (approx .5 mile run) 28:27

Today: First timed stop - 10:36 (exactly the same - weird) / Second timed stop - 16:48 :D / Third timed stop - 23:29
Fourth and Final stop time - 27:11 :D :D
1 minute 16 seconds faster than last week. - and this was after a hard hill workout yesterday evening, so I'm really excited about that!

Thanks Fygle! I'm trying to make all runs achieve something - not just mindless mileage. Right now I'm working on improving 5K race times, running shorter distances focusing on short bursts of speed, combined with overall faster foot turnover - getting body used to running with harder effort - cause that's whats required in a race. I don't want to get into the 2nd mile of race and start to sputter and falter and fade out, but be able to power through and finish strong. :D
This is favorite kind of training - although while I'm doing it I feel like I'm gonna die - but afterwards and for the rest of the day - I FEEL INVINCIBLE!!!
