Walking question

Post by LittlePinky82 »

So I mentioned in journal this and got to thinking about question. Last week I saw on cable's "On Demand" Exercise TV section a tab on walking. I figured it was probably just video's talking about walking and health benefits so I never looked there until last week I decided to and saw there were two video's with walking. One was walking a mile and the other two miles. I've been wanting to get into walking, so I can eventually get into running, but I've been too uncomfortable with the idea. Er I guess you can say paranoid. I still have a good bit of weight to lose so I still get paranoid that people are watching me and saying stuff behind back etc. Even though I know they're probably not, and it wouldn't matter either way, it's still something I think about and that stops me. So I was really pleased to see these two video's. It's basically you walking but it's inside like a cardio routine. You walk in place and at first it's just a slow pace and you add in some front kicks and knee kicks and side lunges and stuff with your arms. So that's why it's like a cardio routine, but you're walking a mile too. You're just working more muscles that you might not work if you were walking outside somewhere. So I'm wondering from people here who are way more knowledgeable than me if this is just as good as regular walking. I can say after about ten or so min's I could start to feel hamstrings being tight and thighs. I didn't stop or anything during the routine not even to take a sip of drink. So I would love to hear opinions. :) On edit with the video after the "warm up" (regular length of a warm up in cardio routines it seemed from experiences with other routines) the pace speeds up and you do "power" walking so your heart rate definitely gets warmed up and I was sweating a little bit on forehead by the end and heart rate pumped.

This sounds like it could better than walking, but it's all relative.

Walking could be better, depending on duration and speed, but I'd say what you're doing sounds like a better thing and the important thing here is that you're happy with it.

I understand how you feel about not wanting people to see you exercising in any way. I share the same "fear". I wouldn't even exercise in own living room around family. It is very real. We also share the same goal. I would love to be able to run, to go jogging. People who can do this, should appreciate this ability.

I think that if you find a workout you can and will do, then by all means, do it. If you don't want to go outside in the open, then doing a routine in the house is fantastic. Better than not doing anything. Your heartrate is up and you're sweating, meaning you're burning calories. Keep at it. There are also many many dvds that you could add to this one you currently are seeing. gogo cardio!!

Good luck and keep burning those calories :D

Littlepinky, I know what you're referring to. I, too, have seen the walking exercises on ONDEMAND. I thought it was going to be a video talking about ways to up your "walk" workout (like adding wrist/ankle weights), then I read the description and thought it was going to be just walking back and forth (lmao) for 20-30 minutes. Imagine surprise to see this woman doing knee-ups  (I don't know if the show I saw is the same as yours, but this woman was doing knee-ups lol).

Edit: oh and I tried exercising with boyfriend. I got him to do a few Jillian Michaels videos and Gilad videos with me, but I can't workout with him. Not because I'm self-conscience about him seeing me, because he'll do something silly and then we get in to laughing so hard we have to stop exercising. I'll go for a walk with him (not the walking video), but aerobics...I think I'll stick to doing that on own. lol (I had read that you don't like people seeing you workout...this was working out with others story lol)
