I am doing push-up on strength training days. 6 days of strength training . I do push-ups on 3 days of those 6.
Currently I am doing them in sets . 10 in every set and I keep going on until I am not able to do it.
I heard from someone(a friend of mine in the military) that you should not do push-ups in sets but continuously until you tire out.
Which one, do you think, is more effective? To do push-ups in sets or continuously ?

Why did they say that? What was the reasoning?
Re: Increasing push-up count
I know a lot of personal trainers that coach push-ups-to-failure as well, especially with plyo-push-ups. I'll be interested to read the feedback on this one.

It was the military. They dont give any reasons there. He just said it is better because it increases your core strength faster than compared to any other method.
Personally I think it tires your muscles out much faster if you do them till failure.
Still , I got no ideas on that

Re: Increasing push-up count
I guess breaking down your body as much as possible is how you make big gains, so if you do sets and stay within your comfort zone it's not the same kind of work out? I'll ask someone who knows and get back to you on this one.
Re: Increasing push-up count
Push-ups will help core strength, because you're doing Planks in effect, with a non-static approach.
You're fluctuating the gravitational effects on the Torso, by moving against gravity on the up movement, whereas Planks mean keeping the Torso the same distance away from the floor all the time.
The continuous working on push-ups, not doing sets instead, would refer to the inability for the Core and other muscles to rest, so you've constantly depleting Oxygen, not resting and allowing some to get back into muscles, effecitvely not giving you the same effect from say 40 continuous push-ups, as opposed to 4 x 10 sets.
However whether the continuous method would yield a better end result, I cannot say.
