Turning fat into muscle?

Post by tubbyt92 »

I'm a little confused. I've looked up articles that say you cant NOT turn fat into muscle and that you must burn the fat off with cardio before trying to gain the muscle. If this is true, then how come I hear of powerlifters who gain fat, like up to 300 pounds purposely, and then start to weight lift, turning all that fat into muscle. There are actual accounts of this. I was shown one by friends but i forgot the name. Can anyone give me the names of people who have done this and explain it a little more to me. Im 6 foot 3 and i weigh 250 pounds and i want to get strong and have a more muscular fit look. Can anyone give me more information about these people and this subject?

Its not alchemy. Fat does not become muscle and muscle does not turn to fat. Generally when trying to gain muscle size you need to eat slightly more to feed the muscle hypertrophy. Many people tend to over do the amount of calories needed. This increase in calories and lifting will lead to a gain in muscle mass and body fat.

When trying to lose fat (do to caloric restriction)it is extremely difficult to gain meaningful muscle mass. This is why bodybuilders generally follow different phases of training and diet.

Bottom line if you want to get more muscle mass you have to eat more and lift more. Once you have the muscle mass you want you can go on a cutting phase to lose the fat. The other way around seldom works if you are trying to gain significant size.

Increase protein to 1.5 grams per pound of body weight, increase calories to about 200 - 250 calories more than your caloric requirements, (more will just get you fat unless you are on steroids) and lift wisely.

Agreed about the lack of conversion. It doesn't happen. Interestingly, last year, Swedish scientists found a substance called Brown Fat, that helps to burn the normal Fat. Supposedly present in babies but previously thought to dissapear before adulthood.

It has not yet been established, exactly how it can be stimulated to help burn normal Fat, but one thing it does do is contain Mitochondria, the energy storing cells that store ATP, the substance that makes muscles move.

They didn't say the Mitochondria in Brown fat had actual ATP stores, but it may do. Sadly thought the science was tinged with irony, as the way this substance was alledgedly going to be stimulated in the future, was probably through some kind of pill. Wouldn't surprise me if such a pill comes out, if it will have the name Lipovarin, Aromastat, Ripped Fuel or something like that on it and be the usual dumbass cureall for overweight people, or snake oil for the obese.

Then it would be a case of good initial science, poor evolution.

I'll explain:

*You don't have to "burn fat with cardio" before gaining muscle. Whoever told you that is ignorant.

*Powerlifters are concerned with absolute strength--not how they look. In some cases being "fatter" gives them better lifts due to body leverages, etc. A powerlifter's only concern would be getting light enough to compete in his/her weight class.

*Bodybuilders often "bulk up"--meaning they take in a lot of calories in order to ad muscle. Then they will start leaning out before competing.

*New trainees can often gain fat and lose muscle at the same time.

*You can gain fat and lose muscle at the same time. But unless you are new to training, you can focus 100% on both at the same time.

Hope this helps.
