okey dokey. well I've decided that I'm going to compete in the dublin city marathon in August.
psyched, nervous, but delighted that I have a definitive goal to work towards.
i just want to finish. Going to do the half tri so 600m swim, 16km cycle and 5km run. goal is that next year I do the full tri.
Going to the gym to talk to trainer about a programme.
very excited...very very excited.
actually
very very very excited.

Not sure...but I think I detected from your post that you are VERY excited about starting your training for a 1/2 triathlon   I think that is awesome! Good luck to you in your training. Is the Dublin city marathon in August another event aside from the 1/2 triathlon or is it part of it?

think family think I'm nuts. Meeting with trainer on Friday to get the 24 week programme going... :D :D :D :D :D

Hi Noosk
I haven't spoken to you for ages. How are you going?
I have just caught up on your posts.

Your son broke his arm - 2 days after son broke his leg. How is your son going?
Mine is on crutches and as he is 13 you wouldn’t believe the tricks that he is doing on the crutches. (Lets not forget he broke his leg in the first place doing a trick called a "suicide". - A suicide is a double forward role - with a 180 twist) Lets just say that the tricks he is doing on the crutches are not exactly a forward role but they are 180 twists) I just say to wife if he breaks the other leg he will then be in a wheelchair. Kids!!

It’s awesome to hear that you are training for a 1/2 marathon. It has always been a goal of mine to also do one. You are inspiring me.

Just a thing on how you feel. I like wise feel - lets say ordinary on probably more times then most. I put it down to training too much & too hard in conjunction with poor to less the adequate diet to fuel body in line with the training & not enough sleep. If you find a formula that works for you to make you feel better, can you share it with me?

I luv your training programs now, so I will actively keep an eye out to see how you prepare for your ½ marathon.

Good Luck

hi again! this is the first time I've had a few mins to update.
Hi Para - thanks for the update. Hope your son is doing better! Sounds like quite the daredevil! guy is getting his cast off his arm this Friday and he can't wait. HE only needed it for five weeks. He still has a bend in his arm for the doctor says it will grow straight as he gets bigger (He's only six so plenty of time). Can't wait to get it off so we can go swimming together again!
Re the 1/2 triathlon. well training going well!
Cut weights back to two days a week now - doing things similar as before but building weight as I get stronger. squats, lunges with bicep curl, clean and press, deadlift, push ups, tricep dips, then ab work.
I've upped training days to six - have an easy week every fourth week to allow for recovery.
I do
swimming x 2 times per week - warm up, strength drills, technique drills, main set then cool down (swim about 1500m)
running x 3 times per week - 30 mins at the moment and working on endurance and speed, varying the workouts
cycling x 3 times per week - 1 spin class, 1 medium length cycle, 1 long cycle (20kms and adding 10% every week).

I'm also cycling all the school runs, playground runs etc. now instead of taking the car. LOVE bike!!!
I did great all weekend and succumbed to the lure of the chocolate today, but sure one day of a couple bites of chocolate will not destroy all hard work!
Am down to 175lbs as of today, so have lost 21lbs in total!!

that's update. still going and really loving the training (especially the swimming, I've been doing a lot of technique work and have cut 30 seconds off 100m from the first time I started!) Still considered slow but I'm getting better and any improvement is a step forward.

Hope you're all well! Will do better at keeping in touch!

well had planned a day of gardening today. not gonna happen until I get to a shop to get some gloves - cannot find any gloves of any size shape colour or style anywhere in the house or shed. grrrr. want to get seeds and get planting. so will have to wait till hubby comes home to get myself organised. Lost lots of plants this winter due to the extreme cold and snow we had in January (not normal for Ireland).

as I'm off running this week (shin splits grr), I'm going for a weights workout and then x trainer fro 20 to 30 mins later.
still doing great on the eating clean (no more chocolate since Monday lol). having a goal is really keeping me focussed. I know that every work out I do is bringing one step closer to goal as opposed to working out for working out's (ok added health benefits of course), but a goal like the race is really motivating.
I found out if I marshall a few duathlons/triathlons in the early part of the summer that I can get free entry to some races later in the summer which saves me money, and also let's me see firsthand how the day runs etc. have sent off application form to be marshall so hoping I hear back from the organisers!

planning a couple of duathlons in july and start of august and triathlon end of August. Don't feel I'll be ready before then.

rightio off to organise the kids and try and get stuck in to this garden while the sun is shining!
Onwards and upwards

I am so happy! had a massive breakthrough in the pool tonight.
i started out swimming 3 mins per 100m 3 weeks ago. Always needing a rest break of at least 1 minute between each 100m (thought I was going to pass out the first day I did sets of 100m).
so tonight after run I decided to go down for a quick dip in the pool. Started freestyle lengths and kept going - nonstop for 750m!!!! could have gone longer but the pool was closing. I didn't stop once! time per 100m was 2:15 and I wasn't out of breath or tired. Finally I've found starting point - stroke came together, rotation, catch, pull, breathing - all drills are finally starting to pay off! I expected to only be able (hoped rather) to swim 200M per set without a break starting next week. Now that I have starting point I know I can continue to work on speed and improve technique to get me going faster!

I know it's slow but I'm only 3 weeks in and I'm delighted with time and the fact that it was an EASY swim!

RUN on the other hand was disastrous. I cannot run at night - I've tried and every time I do, I get terrible cramps. I did intervals for 22 minutes and had to get off the treadmill. Think I'll stick to morning runs from now on. weights tomorrow yippee!!!!!

in other good news - little boy's cast is off!! he's delighted to have his arm back (although it does look a little skinnier than the other one)....he's right back to his old self now and delighted he can go swimming again!

onwards and upwards people.

Great job, girlie! I wish I could swim! I never learned how...took adult swimming lessons a couple years ago...so at least I don't sink anymore. :P

Swimming is a great workout! You should be very, very proud of yourself!!!

Some pointers for you, or things to try.

1. Change your stroke and / or speed every length.

2. Change your stroke and / or speed every session.

3. Change your stroke and / or speed every week.

This should help, as swimming may be a pretty adaptive discipline, meaning the body may get used to the same stroke and speed for weeks on end, making it less effective. Varying things regularly should aleviate this potential scenario.

Thanks guys!
Bossman - y up have been doing that. I mix it up every day which is why I think I could go and do a weight workout and then get into the pool and literally out of nowhere swim longer than previous gasping efforts of 100m.
I change up strokes, change up speed (ie swim off 2:20 then 2:10 then 2:00) and do drills like kicks, side kicks, one arm lengths etc.
Thanks for the advice as always - I'll remember to keep mixing it up and see where I go with it.

on an easy week this week, did a run on saturday and weights in the evening, (run's starting to improve - ie i can run longer than a minute without coming to a complete gasping stop), then on sunday I cycled 26km - was a beautiful day out and i could have kept going but we were heading out to a bbq so had to come in boo hoo.

Have contacted local tri club and they are VERY inclusive and encouraging of beginners so I'll be getting professionally coached swim, run and cycles! first cycle is next week and I can't wait!
onwards and upwards people

finally back here after two days of very slow connection to the point pages wouldn't load. grrr.

felt really horrible today so took the day off - swapped it with tomorrow. going for a jalk tomorrow (jog/walk). still doing intervals but I feel like I can do it now and that I WILL get back to running again.

ate too many carbs and had some chocolate AGAIN today. don't feel bad though. kept within calories. it's gone now so won't be tempted again lol.
