I'm a new Percetarian (form of vegetarian)

Post by DvSxx6 »

Hey everyone! So today is day 1 of percetarian diet and I feel absolutely AMAAZING. If u don't know what percetarian is, it basically means cutting out all beef, pork, and chicken out of diet, but I am allowing myself to still eat fish. I'm undecided whether I want to eat eggs or dairy, but I'm thinkin of just eating the egg whites and going the soy route (soy milk, eating soy beans, etc). I'm not quite sure since I don't want to deprive myself of any nutrients.. which leads me to question:

How am I able to get proper nutrients in terms of fat/carbs/protein/calcium/calories/etc on a Percetarian diet? I've seen many different websites, but I'm just so confused about all the different sources and at this point, I'm unsure of what to believe.

How do I know how much fat/carbs/protein/calcium that I would need in a day (gram-wise)? For age and size, I am supposed to take in about 1500-1700 calorites per day. I know that being conscious of fat/carbs/protein/calcium/etc are also very important, but I don't know what to look for on this new percetarian diet in terms of calories/fats/protein/calcium etc? I guess I'm also very confused about the allotment of each source per day.

I'm relatively small in size and about a week ago, I bought thermolean, which is a diet pill fat burner. Today was the first day that I took 2 pills, exercised for 2 hours in a very long time, and didn't smoke for the entire day in about 4 months or so. I know that I'm not fat but I wanted somethin to boost me up with minimal effort LOL (In the past, I really didn't want to go to the gym because I felt very lethargic and lazy). Now that I've decided to make the switch from eating meat to not eating meat, quitting smoking and not drinkin beer (but wine occasionally is fine), it almost feels like I don't need thermolean. I have natural energy & I feel absolutely wonderful!. I know that most people say that diet pills are a waste of time but I am afraid that I won't be able to do it on own (plus I spent money on it, but that's actually secondary, since health is most important). I'm thinkin I should just not use the pills because eventually I'm going to have to get off of them anyway. Plus, I won't know whether to attribute weight loss to healthier eating habits/exercise or the pills themself.

Any suggestions? Thanks in advance for any suggestions/comments/advice!

Hi there,

May I ask why you decided to become a pescetarian? I'm curious if you're doing so because you feel like beef, pork, and chicken are unhealthy or if its because of personal beliefs.

Definitely ditch the diet pills. They are a waste of time and money and can be harmful. I would also work very hard on ditching those cigarettes as well... however I'm sure you know the health risks associated with those so I won't lecture you.

I agree with les that a macro breakdown of 30/30/40 (p/f/c) is a great place to start. From there you can determine how you feel and the progress you're making after about a month or so and adjust as needed. Some people do better with a little more fat and fewer carbs and others do better with less fat and more carbs. I prefer to keep protein around 1-1.5 grams per pound of bodyweight.

Also, you said you started taking the diet pills to "boost you up with minimal effort"... I feel like I need to address this. :) When it comes to health and fitness you get out of it what you put into it (usually). Which is why diet pills won't work. Also, you said in the past you didn't want to go to the gym because you felt lethargic and lazy. I'm a firm believer that once you start working out you'll feel better and with time will actually begin to look forward to those workouts.

Hope this helps!

Cassie :)

Thanks for your response everyone! :-D I really appreciate it.
And lol, yeah, I get the word mixed up for some reason.. Pescetarian! lol. Gota remember that since that is what I will be from now on hehe.

Amatlack: How have you felt since becoming a Pescetarian? And may I ask, is there a reason why you've decided to reintroduce organic chicken into your diet?

Lesplease: Thank you for the breakdown of protein/fat/carb requirements. I've always been confused about how much I need and such, and that will help in guiding me. So if I'm understanding you correctly, I have a 30 grams of protein allotment per day but I also have to make sure that the fat per day totals 30 grams and the protein 40 grams? I'm supposed to have about 1500 calories per day, so I'm not sure how the calories part plays in with the protein/fat/carb allotment.

Cassiegose: I've decided to go pescetarian because I feel it's not only very unethical but very sad and disgusting as to how the chicken, pigs, and beef are raised and killed for their meat. All of the antibiotics that are used on them is also another concern of mine which is what I consume. I'm not downing anyone who chooses to eat meat since I used to be (and still am) a huge fan of steak and chicken breast, but for me, choosing not to eat meat is a completely personal choice. I'd def encourage it to others, however I would never force beliefs onto others since it is completely that person's prerogative.

I've also noticed that by becoming pescetarian (I know it's only day 2 but I've already noticed changes in energy level & mood), I've been exercising a lot more, I've quit 1-pack a day smoking habit (no cravings at all!), I have stopped drinkin beer about every other nite (bad, bad I know) and I feel so much more energized and happier :-)

N yes I'll definitely throw away the diet pills. It kinda is a waste of 30 somethin dollars, but honestly, those pills would just hurt me in the long run. I've realized that it's def not worth it.

Anyway, thanks again everyone for your responses :-D

You're probably one of the few people to take stuff like that that has actually realised something important. It's a pity it didn't happen before you bought them, but it is a significant and potentially very healthy decision to reach, so kudos for that. You will stop yourself potentially from getting dissapointing performance of the pills, or worse very bad short or long-term side effects.

For someone like you, who wants to exercise and control diet, you could consume around 2,100-2,200 calories approximately, as you've got 1,800 female average, plus another 300-400 for exercise.

For your ratios I would work with any of the flowwing.

1. 33% Protein, 33% Carbs, 33% Fat.

2. 30% Protein, 40% Carbs, 30% Fat.

3. 40% Protein, 40% Carbs, 20% Fat.

Protein only needs ot be around 1.2g per lb of bodyweight, 1.5g max, but for you around 1.2g as a max should be fine.

Some Carb sources are quite high Glycemic, but they are beneficial, like Whole-grains, Parsnips, Watermelon, Pasta, Rice, (White, Brown Wild), Potato etc etc, so it would be beneficial not to just ditch these entirely as some people or diet systems would have you believe.

You can control their impact by mixing in other low Gi foods, like Broccoli, Mushrooms, Beans, Tomato, Nuts, Onions as examples. By have a 50-50 or 75-25 low - high GI ratio, the impact on bloodsugar can be reduced, when you have high GI.

If you want to eat those kinds of Carbs, on their own, you can, as long as you don't exceed about 1 portion a day 5-7 days a week and don't go bazurk and have a big portion either.

Having massive Bloodsugar spikes from high GI, can incur an increased risk of type II Diabetes.
