Hello, so I am getting a hip arthroscopy on February 17th. Basically, they go in with small cameras and shave off part of hip socket that is tearing cartilage. Then they sew the cartilage up. So, surgeon said it would be best if I was as fit and healthy as possible when the surgery takes place so that the recovery can go smoother and faster. The more useful muscles I have before the surgery, the easier it will be for me to get strength back. I would say I am relatively fit, and pretty healthy, but I would like to get more core strength, and upper body strength since I will be maneuvering on crutches for a bit. I also should prob up calcium/vitamin d levels to help with the bone and cartilage. I just really dont like milk....
I was wondering if anyone has any suggestions for me, what to do as far as workouts go before surgery, and anything I should do as far as diet.
I guess I should also mention, I can't do high impact stuff, cause knee is not the best. I have screws there as well as by hip that they will be taking out during the surgery as well. I do not have access to a gym. Just 8lb dumbells, resistance bands, and a yoga mat at home.
Ok, so, any suggestions? I guess I just want to be as fit as possible with the limited exercise that I can do.

Don't need Milk for Bone nutrition necessarily.
You need things like Calcium, Vit D, K2, Boron, Phsophorus, Magnesium and Copper.
You can get these from Nuts, Rice, Beans, Liver, Pork, Low Fat Cheese, Fish, Shellfish, Soy products, (Soy beans, Nattokinase, Tempeh, Tofu, Edamame), any other Fat sources like Flax, Omega Eggs, Peanuts, Nuts, Avocado, Oils, Seeds, though obviously those things don't all contain the aforementioned nutrition at once, they have some of it, so are all worthy foodstuffs.
As for Cartilage, start taking a Hyaluronic Acid Supplement. One thing Cartilage contains is H A, so does skin, so you'd be potentially doing yourself a favour, especially for skin condition around the Knee.
I'd be loathed to reccomend exercise of a weighted kind right now, because of the Hip and Knee problems.
I would suggest a good stiff walk if possible for 20 minutes a day, to promote blood flow to the area, and increase suppleness. Plus if you're stretching out the muscle fibres, and loadbearing weight on the area, it should have some effect on muscle conditioning, if only to reduce atrophy.
Providing you at least keep calories the same, you should be fine. little Atrophy should occur.

Re: Preparing for surgery
Awesome thanks so much for the quick reply. I will look for an H A supplement next time i'm near GNC. I always though milk was like the super food for bones. Thank goodness I can go without drinking it haha. I hate milk.
Re: Preparing for surgery
Milk helps with Bones, of course, but it's no where near vital.
Whatever happens, GOOD LUCK and please let us know how things work out. We think a lot of you and we'd like to be here for you whatever happens

Re: Preparing for surgery
Thanks so much! I should be fully recovered in about 5 months as it is a relatively easy surgery, so hopefully all goes well.
