hip pain
I was doing stiff leg DL's the last couple of weeks. Not sure it's related but seem to be getting a sharp pain the next day.
Not sure if they call it the gluteus minimus or if it's actually the hip joint itself.I was doing regular dl's for a while(over a year) and decided maybe the rdl's for better hamstring work and just something different.Wasn't feeling this with the regular dl's.The reason I'm asking is because today I couldn't do any heavy squats.usually do the dead's on monday and then the squats on friday(although this week it was saturday and then wednesday) so I always have 3-4 days in between. It feels like it's right above the hip joint/bone slightly towards the back. The weight on the rdl's isn't maxing, doing 6 reps and feel like I have the strength for slightly more weight.
could it just be too much time under tension.
I have 58 year old bones

Re: hip pain
Sciatica will give those symptoms. Have you ever had any sciatic issues?
If it is sciatica then the pain you are feeling is symptomatic of the sciatica and not a result of the exercises.
Do you sit on hard surfaces? The nerve runs under the glutes and sitting on hard surfaces can bruise it.

Re: hip pain
I had a standing job for 25 years and now the last 8 have been a sitting job.....at a desk in front of a computer.
never had any sciatica stuff going on but it really seems whether coincidental or not that it started about 3-4 sesions ago. It's really been noticeable after the saturday session this is wednesday but it does seem to bother me as I sit.Itry and get up and move around every hour or 2.Maybe dem bones are getting old.
thanks for the response,pack man

Re: hip pain
i wouldn't jump right to sciatica and if it was that, the pain would be bad enough that you would have gone to the doc for it, not here
that being said your glutes aren't functioning enough and your lifting with your lower back too much
also check your technique

Re: hip pain
technique seems to be different for the regular deads and the stiff leg.Stiff leg maybe has more of the tension as your holding the lift for 4-6 reps rather than the deads which are more like individual lifts. hamstrings seem to be a lagging part and trying to get them up to snuff but I may just go back to the regular deads and see if I continue to have that hip thing going.
on another note I had the step up question a few weeks ago and the advice Pack and Swans gave worked out fine. The weaker leg has progressed to being almost the same as the stronger leg.
thanks guys and congrats on the 10,000 mark

Well I have sciatica and those are the same sypmptoms I get when I use rowing machine for extended periods of time. The hard seat presses on the sciatic nerve and bruises it.
It hurts also after long drives.
It could be any of many things that causes this pain. I was offering sciatica up as one possiblity.
Re: hip pain
long drives bother both knee and hip. Will have to put that in the equation. But don't usually have problems in the gym.It just seemed to get worse after each session of the rdl's then get better as the week wore on.Like I said I guess I'll either go back to the regular deads or take a small break and see what's what.Just wasn't sure if the rdl's recruit the exact same muscles and stuff as the regular deads and was hurting or straining something. It's pretty much why I don't do good mornings.Just not sure learning the technique will be anymore beneficial than the damage I might do.
thanks for the input

Re: hip pain
deadlifts and good mornings require a 'hip hingeing" movement which is well worth learning because everytime you bend you should do it
Re: hip pain
I went to rheumatologist on Friday and mentioned hip pain.
She said that hip joint pain feels like it originates in the groin area.
Outer hip pain is likely a bruise of the bursa and I should remove objects from rear pockets when sitting to relieve that.
Back of the hip pain is likely sciatica.
From the description she gave we concluded that I have both sciatica and bursa issues.

Re: hip pain
I'll continue with the deadlifts.
If I was to make a self diagnosis I would go with that hip bursa.Just seems too localized for sciatica and definitley not as painful, just annoying. wallet has no money so it's pretty flat

Re: hip pain
The doctor told me to move wallet to by front pocket while driving or sitting. Pretty easy to do, but I have doubts about how effective it will be--I only carry one wallet and both hips are hurting.moman129 wrote:I'll continue with the deadlifts.

Re: hip pain
sitting on your wallet puts pressure on the piriformis/glute medius which develops trigger points/restrictions and bang - hip/glute problems

That still does not explain why one wallet would cause pain in 2 hips.
Re: hip pain
you'll have pain for the same side from restriction and then pain in the other side from overuse
