Put 3 on each side. If they weigh the same then you know that the heavier one is amongst the 3 that you have not weighed. If one group is heavier than the other, then you know that the heavier ball is amongst those three.
Then take the group of 3 balls that you have determined has the heavier ball and place one ball on each side a hold the remaining ball aside. If the two balls weigh the same, then the ball that is not being weighed is the heavier one. If one ball is heavier, it is the heavy one.
Two weighings, one heavy ball determined. I feel stronger already.

Hours? I have a 3 minute limit. Anything I can't figure out in 3 minutes gets forgotten. That's probably why I've never married.
