Here's an article where bodybuilder Hugo Rivera describes what he feels the advantages are to such an approach:

One benefit of Splits include potentially being able to focus more on things like technique.

People on TBT, can sometimes lose technique, because they get so used to doing something 2-3 times a week, they become nonchalent at it, and technique suffers. I've seen it myself. It's like people who drive like learners after they pass their test and 6 months later they're driving like idiots in some cases. I'm guilty probably in the past of technique suffering when you perhaps get so used to something, if technique suffers a little you don't notice, when it's a regular thing.

Some may say splits promote greater muscle activation and growth, because you don't necessarily train a muscle so close to itself, you promote additional fatigue.

The flip side is that the muscle will start to atrophy, when it's actually recovered, promoting losses of some of the post-workout gains, before the next session, whereas TBT's would never really permit that to any great extent.

Then you can compare the residual gains versus those on TBT.
