@brenty: that really made me smile... you know, the way you put it was rather very comforting... you don't have to really be hard on yourself... like you said, i did that, losing 1 pound a week was goal... let me do it all over again and this time hope i dont fail it... it felt good when i was disciplined in what i ate and did a workout... i do not go to the gym. i have been advised by Gyno to brisk walk for half an hour and apart from that I love jane fonda's home videos to sculpt and strengthen body. I have them and I used to follow them religiously. I will get back to that. I know the results are slow but it will be steady. I am only fighting way to make sure i dont succumb to temptation... I LOVE pasteries and home made chocolates
brenty, btw, good going on where you have reached now... you have worked your way towards your goal, can see it :D all the best.

Brent, I am very impressed at the depth and truth of your posts for Sahana. Your honesty comes from past experience and I can definitely relate and respect that. I really can't add anything further, and plan on printing out your post about the "setback exercise" that is awesome! And favorite:

That is great stuff Brent!
So, welcome Sahana, good luck on your weight loss and fitness goals. We want to help in any way we can. Remember...baby steps, like Brent said. Short term goals will help you get to the "big" picture. Find the balance of being strict and focused on your food choices and commitment to exercising, but don't be so hard on yourself that is sets you back or allows feelings of defeat or failure. Just keep on keeping on...if you stumble along the way, just start over right then and don't let it drag you down.
Life really is just a series of choices we make. It applies to every aspect of our life. We are all here searching and learning about the "choice" to live as healthy and happy as we can, and it is great to have this outlet for support and advice and friendship! :D

@ brenty: you are supercool! if im having a rough day i just log in here and posts from all you guys make me smile :D
though in life, i am pretty good at choosing what is good for me, the same word "choose" is a big deal in your advice and i am wondering why it does not strike me when i am about to lose focus... well whatever is the present state of physique, i know it is for not choosing right for body...
okay, few more details on lifestyle and eating...

I am a pure vegetarian. indian staple diets are very different form the west countries.
night sleep is from 3am to 10am ... i try to get 7 hours of uninterrupted sleep.
breakfast at 10:30am: i glass full milk, a handful of mixed dry fruits(walnuts, almonds, cashew, raisn, dates) and a piece of fruit.
lunch: brown rice or 2 wheat breads(flat indian bread) called "roti" with vegetables vegetables are either boiled or stir fried with some spices) and a cup of youghurt.
evening time: green tea and most of the times a handful of banana chips, potato wafers (i know this is not doing any good to me, but i feel the need to eat something crunchy with a little salt and spice)
dinner: 2 "rotis" (indian wheat bread) with vegetables (vegetables are either boiled or stir fried with some spices)
before bed time: a glass of warm milk (i sometimes forget to drink it or feel too lazy to drink it) i take in plain milk wihtout sugar or any added flavours.

i just want to know if i am eating right... and i have really made a conscious effort to reduce eating portions... i was pretty much a "large" eater and now eating portions are very much smaller...
another problems i face is when husband comes back form work at 1am in the night, i prepare food for him or give him snacks to eat....basically any crackers or cruncky stuff he loves the most... which is just to settle down the hunger pangs and satisfy the taste buds... this makes me dig into his plate and give him company while we both watch tv and talk and sometimes i would have eaten along with him late at night... i feel very hungry at late nights... i hear the rumbling in stomach... and its a bad feeling... so i sometimes eat instant pasta or maggi noodles... is this very bad?? im not sure... :(

if anyone could suggest me a very healthy vegetarian diet which can break it up to 6 small meals a day that would be great! :)

thank you very much all, and i will let you know how work out plan is... i have just a little more work to finish the plan and will share it with you... i always keep thinking of how great i would look once i lose the FAT... i have purchased a very pretty outfit 2 sizes smaller than what i wear and goal is to get into it comfortably and that is success to me. i also got blood and ultra sounds done (lower abdomen and pelvis) as period was really getting delayed offlate and reports are nomal and thats good news until now, im waiting for one more test report to arrive which is a harmone test and that will tell what problem it is...
okay, i guess i will eagerly wait up for you all to speak about what i have described until now... thanks again! :D

(You're slightly confusing the issue here for yourself. Walnuts Almonds and Cashews are Nuts, Cashews being the only one of those three to be a Carb source. The Raisins and Dates are very high GI, especially Dates, they rank about 105, which is higher than pure Glucose, when comparing the same Carb amount in both.

You need Bloodsugar elevation when you wake, not least to have Carbs to feed your Brain. You could go a bit higher than you would normally, but not too much is quite important, as frequently high Bloodsugar elevations can sometimes result in type two Diabetes.

I would suggest, you keep the Fruit, keep the Cashews, for added Carb and Fats, and then you need more Protein than the Nuts will give you, in order to preserve muscle mass, and give yourself adequate daily amino acid intake. As you already do that with Milk, you should be fine.)

lunch: brown rice or 2 wheat breads(flat indian bread) called "roti" with vegetables vegetables are either boiled or stir fried with some spices) and a cup of youghurt.

(I'd stick to the Rice and Veggies, as Wheat bread is low Protein. Veggies will lower the effects on Bloodsugar from the Rice. I would however reduce Rice amount, keep the Yoghurt for more Protein and Carbs, and consider perhaps a slight increase in Veggie amounts, to help recover some lost Rice Carbs.)

evening time: green tea and most of the times a handful of banana chips, potato wafers (i know this is not doing any good to me, but i feel the need to eat something crunchy with a little salt and spice)

(No you need to change this. I'd would opt for something like a portion of Legumes, (Peas, Beans, Lentils), and a small portion of Rice or Mushrooms, to boost Carbs, and to compliment the two Protein sources, to make sure Amino intake is good.)

dinner: 2 "rotis" (indian wheat bread) with vegetables (vegetables are either boiled or stir fried with some spices)

(This is okay, but you need more Protein somewhere. Difficult for a Vegetarian, but maybe some Low Fat Cheese perhaps, or some Eggs, (assuming you're not an Eggitarian), Legumes maybe, or Mushrooms perhaps.)

before bed time: a glass of warm milk (i sometimes forget to drink it or feel too lazy to drink it) i take in plain milk wihtout sugar or any added flavours.

(If you want to add snacks in between meals, then things like Low Fat Cheese, Peanuts, Nut Yoghurts, Beans and Rice, maybe even Soy and Soy products like Tempeh, Edamame, Tofu etc etc, if possible.)
The power for you to do this is all in your head. Humans are programmed in many ways to be lazy. Even in prehistoric times, when females had pre-defined domesticated roles, men would be very active through hunting, but things like mammalian domestication, changed that for some, making animals more of convenience foods, or easier to get from local farmers, so as time progressed, humans lost the need to be active, through progress and modernisation.

The ability to be active on a consistent basis, has always remained, but it is a mental thing. Without belief, patience and mental and emotional balance / control of your physical actions, achievement potential will remain very poor for some. As many try but cave in and lose motivation.

If you are strong mentally, and remain focused on not just the short-term goals you seek, but on the long-term health of your body, so as to better preserve yourself for old age, you will not fail to achieve what you want.

You need to remember, that sometimes you will make mistakes, you are human, it's allowed, so don't be hard on yourself. When that happens, learn from it, pick yourself up, move on and keep doing what you are capable of. To properly care for yourself, you have to be caring for yourself, not hard and emotionally punishing on yourself when you make human errors.

So good luck to you, and don't be afraid of making mistakes, or feeling like you aren't doing things right. It's a learning process, but it's something you CAN get right, if you believe in yourself enough.

You ARE worth the time end effort to change yourself. Don't ever forget that. You DO have value as a person, so keep realising that and building on it yeah. Your attitude to people here, shows you're quite a warm person and you want to care for yourself, so you certainly deserve the chance to succeed at your chosen goal :).

I hope we can help you to change yourself for the better. We will care for you, if you continue to care for yourself okay :).

@ boss man - thanks. i appreciate your advice. I am making those little changes in diet and finding vegetarian alternatives to balance out intake of protiens and carbs.
Regarding workouts, I used to train on Jane Fonda's personal trainer series. I have pretty good collection of them. I learnt that a good workout session consists of cardio, weights and flexibility training. I do not have any membership at the Gym so I decided I would use these videos to help me with the workout routines. I have low impact aerobis and stretch, workout for Abs Buns and Thighs, Total body sculpting and lower body work outs. The only workout gear I have is a workout mat, 2 - 3 sets of weights and a set of ankle weights and no other fancy equipment. I personally find her workouts easy to follow and they way she carries the flow of workouts is very motivating and at every step the correct posture and breathing technique has been indicated.
I have a question. If i work 6 days a week, what would be the best plan on combining weight training, cardio and flexibility (yoga postures and stretches)? Is it really necessary to do weights on alternate days and allow the muscle group to rest? (for example I do light weights with more repetitions to tone biceps and triceps and also do shoulder shrugs, bent over lateral raises 3 sets of each these). How can I spread the workout schedule over 6 days for effective weight loss and burning fat? I can put 50 minutes to 60 minutes a day for workouts.

Try something like this.

Day 1. Weights

Day 2. Video

Day 3. Weights.

Day 4 Day off.

Day 5. Video.

Day 6. Weights.

Day 7. Day off.

You could possibly incorporate some Yoga into weights sessions as a mild warmdown, after you lift.

You shoudn't need to exceed around 1hr 10 minutes on any day you train.

The problem with Ankle weights is they may stress the Joint and associated tissues, so don't use them.

As for what you have in the way of other weights, you need to try and find a balance with them.

I'd suggest something like this.

DB Squats.

DB Lunges

Wall press-ups.

Bent over DB Rows.

Hammer Curls.

Tricep Kickbacks

Planks for Abs.

All those should be two sets of 10 repetitions, so your body can adjust to it, for 4-6 weeks.

Give yourself 90 seconds between sets, and try to use the very lightest weights on things like Arms and Shoulders, and then the next highest, on big areas Like Legs and Back, so you don't overdo it.

That should be fine, assuming the Fonda Videos are just aerobics, no weight based stuff, which I think they're not.
