Middle/Back Deltoids.

Post by Blksocks »

Is it pointless doing dumbbell deltoid presses and behind the head deltoid presses with the smith machine when the dumbbell deltoid presses seem to work both middle and back? I mean, if you do it just right wouldn't it work middle and back muscle at the same time?

Been boggling mind!

DB delt presses work the middle shoulders and the behind the head delt presses with smith or barbell work the rear shoulders. Was just curious if it was nonsense to do both and just do db delt presses which seem to do both. :D

I would advise against Delt work, that requires any use fo a Bar behind the Neck.

A: You could push the Delts past 180 degrees, overstressing the area, which is not good.

B: You could end up having to tip the Neck forwards, which pronounces some of the Vertebrae, and maybr potentially leave them in a slightly unnatural position, for a prolonged time, whilst you loadbear weight on the area. Again, not potentially good for you.

C: You do both. Doubly not good for you.

Unlike DB Shoulder Presses, or even Machine ones, any Bar work, would result in one or both of the above things happening, otherwise you'd just hit yourself on the Head, and have abysmal range of motion to boot.

I used to do Lat Pull-downs with the behind the Neck action, but it wasn't so bad when you're using low levels, but there comes a time when you think a higher weight level could have long-term repercussions.

Lesplease wrote:DB or Smith. No reason to do both. I personally avoid the Smith. Anything with a fixed track kinda freaks me out.

If you find yourself doing the same basic exercise, you should probably try doing slightly more weight. No reason to do both (: It can stress yo' joints.
To expand on this point, watch from the side as someone does free benches. The actual motion is a shallow S-curve and the bar does not go straight up and down. When you force your arms out of that S-curve to a straight line (Smith machine) or a gentle arc back (pivot machines) you force your shoulder joint to work in ways it was not intended.

So Lesplease's, "Anything with a fixed track kinda freaks me out" can be fully understandable.

Yes Vamp, I reccomend subliminal self help tapes, and also some of those Horse blinkers, to channel your vision where you want it, like on the Smith Machine for example and nowhere else :P.

do not like smith macines at all - good for hanging towels on though! Also for reverse rows.
