Rice..

Ok, so now I've run out of uncle bens parboiled white rice, which is tasty, so here is the dilema,,brown rice seems to have more fat, more sodium, with only a few less carbs & a cpl grams more protein..per serving..though alot of ppl say the taste is alot different, so why does everyone say brown rice is better for u ?..

The first white rice is unenriched.So basically the only difference is the amount of fiber, slightly less in carbs & slightly higher i protein, higher fat & salt in brown rice, so begs the question, why is brown better ? Is it just a fad, that ppl tout, like when whole wheat became the rage, which now actually has been shoved aside, becos of its bloating factors.

Wow good article, so taste wise I've eaten basmatti rice is that brown ?..anyway I do plan to buy brown this time, like all other foods & habits ive adopted over the last 1 1/2 yrs, I'll make myself like it, cos health & fitness is number one in life :D

I actually like brown rice better than white. It has a better texture and pairs really well with steamed veggies, or shrimp, chicken, or turkey sausage for a quick easy meal. I use the boil-in-bag brown rice (just cause I like to not have to measure anything, just throw it in the pot with some water!) but I do like to add about 2 tbsps of Sun-Dried tomato vinaigrette dressing/marinade to the water - gives the rice a nice kick and flavor. Then I sprinkle some Parmesan cheese (just a little) on when I serve it. I do the same thing with whole wheat pasta. :D

I'm going to throw in a curveball here. Yes you can berate me later, but have you considered Wild Rice as another choice, instead of just Brown?

I know even less abt wild rice, than I do brown rice, think I'll make a point to check out all rices :)

try trader joes organic brown rice in the frozen section--simple to prepare and good for you.

Ok, so I bought some brown rice in a brown bag today...diamond G farmers select...seriously wasnt a huge choice of brown rices.Now oddly enough Id forgotten magnifying glass at home, so I may of well been BLIND for reading the lable.For a 45 gram serving it has 36 g of carbs, .5 g of fat, no sodium & only 1 g of fiber, oh & 160 calories.Seems high in carbs ?..Sorry bossman wild rice slipped mind, though I might take this back, saw some brown basmatti rice too.

That many Carbs on your Brown, (GI 70 approx), is only going to increase Bloodsugar by around 25%, which is not too bad. A little on the high side with a scale, but of course you need to allow for a bit of lost Carbs during cooking. Besides, if you mixed something into it, like say a small amount of Mushooms as an example, (GI 10), making up around 1/4 of total Carbs, you'd probably be okay.

I'd be more concerned if the Bloodsugar increase was 35%+ after cooking. Also it depends on how often you eat it. Once or twice a week, no problem, 10+ times, more of an issue for Bloodsugar with the frequent spikes.

Well..It tastes better than it smells..reminds me of when I switched from white bread to whole grain, though on the bag it speaks of the texture as chewy & in all coolness it surely is, was kinda fun to eat ;)
